I've been thinking about this and weighing up the options of Chad Dawson, Glen Johnson, Carl Froch or something completely out of the ordinary by moving up in weight class to pick on a bogus titleist up there. Then one guy's name came into my head that hasn't been talked about as yet. A man that will come to loom large over Calzaghe's long reign at SMW in the future. A man who retired, undefeated, boxing in the weight class Calzaghe boxed in for most of his career. Sven Ottke.

There have been rumours of Ottke making a comeback once or twice lately. He is the one obvious guy in Calzaghe's era that was at the top while Joe was there but they never agreed to fight each other. When people look back in years to come, they will wonder why these two extrememely dominant CV's never faced one another.

If Calzaghe gets Ottke's name on his CV - even this way - it will do his long reign a world of good. It would be a crap fight to watch, awful clash of styles, but purely for the risk/reward it would be inspired. I'm not saying that he would be the toughest test out there or he deserves a shot more than others mentioned, but for selfish reasons, it would make sense. Ottke couldn't possibly beat Calzaghe in Cardiff at the moment. It would take Ottke's undefeated career out of the equation when people look back and compare the records of the time.

Am I crazy or is this a good idea?

Think Ottke would come out of Germany to almost certainly lose the only thing that really gives him any notoriety in the eyes of boxing history? Doubt it.

    good thought with Ottke.

Joe can retire now with fame and fortune!

Johnson would put a stamp on his career. Bad Chad would make him higher in status as well.

How about if Calzaghe calls Marvin Hagler out of retirement. Imagine him having that name on his resume! Then for his grand finale he can move up to heavy and call out Ali. After taking the win there, absolutely no one could argue how truly great he is when they look back at his resume 50 years from now! That would really cement his "greatness"!

    Yeh, u are crazy.:patsch

Ottke would add nothing to Joe's legacy, and it only adds to his resume to people who just look at paperwork.

Ottke retired because he was too scared to fight Mundine, so i cant see him even contemplating a fight with JC.

JoeCal is screwed if he does anything other then retire. If he fights Dawson and wins then you will hear "Dawson was not ready for him he was to green".

If he fights Johnson and wins you will hear "Johson was past it and been beat by Dawson and a list of others already".

If he rematches Hopkins and wins you will hear "Hopkins won the fight".

I will have to remember these.

"Dawson is not ready for him yet Dawson is green," "Johson was past it and been beat by Dawson and a list of others already". "Hopkins won the fight"

Joe's not old enough to fight Dawson.......

  10. That would net him 48 wins (he'd have to be favored over Ali). Might as well go all the way. Either nab smokin' Joe Frazier or Manny Pacquaio (if he's feeling especially bold and daring).

Then call out Jose Conseco or Danny Bonaduce and go out in style with one last go for the hometown fans.

    Legend.

    50-0 :happy

i dont think there is anyone left out there that can do anything for his resume unless he steps up to cw and beats adamek ,that should put him to no1 p4p.
but that aint going to happen,so from smw to lhw there is no body to add anything to his resume,so all he can do is pick the most exciting fight for his fans to watch in cardiff.
so who would be most exciting????dawson????johnson????froch????

I think excitement would be Froch with that use my chin as my defense style. Can see JoeCal popping combos of his nut all night.

Calzaghe is a ten year, unbeaten, 46-0, world title holder, and by default the best super middleweight ever. He has a legacy, there is no denying it.

Moving up to CW and beating Adamek would do his resume the World of good, providing Adamek goes onto have a decent career afterwards. Ditto with Dawson, at least then he'd pick up a 'World' title at LHW to add to the ring belt.

If not, Zsolt Erdei? Undefeaed and holds the WBO title, awful fighter but Calzaghe loves that belt!
