Avoided thats right, Calzaghe offered to fight Ottke for one Euro plus travelling expenses, Ottke did not want to know, Hopkins agreed to fight Calzaghe in 2002 only to ask for double the money the next day after hearing about how good Calzaghe was and then of course we have Roy Jones Jnr who asked Chris Eubank if he should fight Calzaghe [back in the day] and was told by Eubank the 'risk is too great', Jones took Eubanks advice and avoided Joe Calzaghe, then we have Steve Collins who retired from boxing instead of defending his title against Calzaghe.

Calzaghe was just too good, lots of boxers were frightened to fight Calzaghe, as they either knew they would lose or thought there was a good chance they would lose.

If they swapped opponents, the only real difference I see is that Calzaghe would beat Jermain Taylor. Of course, Hopkins has been fighting at an older age.

Agreed some of these fights would be tough for JC. But the intangibles always seemed to be on his side. In other words, regardless of the opponent or style, he found a way to win. I believe this would hold true with these opponents as well.

You are bound to have better intangibles if most of your opponents are either.....

    1. Not all that good
    2. Past it/shot

Calzaghe had brilliant stamina and ring IQ, but never REALLY proved it against top line fighters.

The last time I saw CHJ bring up Winky, I think he called him "Roland".

Steve Collins retired on the advice of a doctor that told him that his continuing to fight would endanger his life. The man that took the hardest blows of heavy puncher Nigel Benn and proceeded to beat the **** out of Benn twice did not duck Calzaghe(retire in order to avoid him?No.).Please do not ever type that nonsense here again. Please go back to the General to do that.Prime Jones ducked Calzaghe on the "advice" of Chris Eubank(what?) but anyway proceeded to fight Joe when Jones was completely shot?Good ganga. Now here's reality. In his autobiography and in at least one interview,Calzaghe claimed that he would never fight Jones because Calzaghe (correctly) claimed that Jones was shot due to his 2 devastating losses to Johnson and Tarver. He also claimed that due to those 2 facts,Jones was unworthy. Then when the fight was signed,Calzaghe went around saying that Jones was still great-perhaps thinking he could get away with such remarks after Jones beat(but couldn't ko) equally shot former welterweight Tito Trinidad. In other words, that's when Calzaghe showed his true colors and lied through his teeth in order to make himself look good. The fact that he and his fans(I used to be one.Shame on me.) brag about beating shot Jones certainly puts a dark cloud over their claims of beating a "legend".It's simple.Calzaghe is a liar and completely lacks credibility.By the way,why did Calzaghe give Mario Veit a rematch and not give one to Hopkins when Hopkins was screaming for one?And just for the record,I had JC winning the fight by a point(?),maybe 2(?).I don't quite remember. And one other thing. Before anyone claims that Hopkins was prime (or 90%,whatever)when they fought,BH had lost 2 decisions to Jermaine Taylor years before he and Calzaghe fought. Please go back to the General Forum. It is screaming for you.

Good points. A bit rough on Calzahge, but fair enough. I think Joe just bought into the bill of goods that Warren sold him and he just was made to believe risking a loss would have ruined his drawing power or something?
Warren did the same thing with Hamed and Hatton and would have kept doing it had they not insisted on testing their skills against elite fighters. Warren never wanted to put them in any type of risky fight because of how easy they were to sell to the boxing public over there.
Its ashame, because I think Joe had the heart and guts to be right in the mix with the big boys had he stepped up, but he certainly wouldnt be retiring undefeated had he done so.

I believe Calzaghe was a great fighter, too, but stopped being a fan after the Jones situation.I only know of Warren from what the Brits write about him on this site, but it sounds like he's the British version of Arum or King, which means less than trustworthy.

This is ******ed, Hopkins is a career middleweight and Calzaghe a career supermiddleweight.

Its easy to pick Calzaghe over Hopkins opposition because hes bigger but the fact that you are picking Bhop over everyone of Calzaghe's opposition (except 1) who are bigger than Bernard just goes to show how great a fighter Hopkins is.
