With the recent spate of china chin threads on ESB its become apparant that many people have trouble distinguishing glass jaws from average jaws, and good chins to iron chins.

Im going to seperate the various "chins" into 6 easy to manage catergories with a few examples thrown in,

Iron Chins (Rarely knocked down or hurt if ever, took flush shots from known punchers without being hurt) - Margarito, James Toney, Oliver McCall, Bhop, Vitali Klitschko, Abraham, Andrade, Froch.

Good Chins (Knocked down or hurt on occasion, but have shown strong chins for majority of career) - Mayweather, Calzaghe, Mosley, Juan Diaz, Guzman.

Average Chins (Not amazing but not terrible either) - (Manny Pacquiao, JMM, Ricky Hatton, Chad Dawson, Kelly Pavlik)

Shaky Chins (Knocked down multiple times against less than stellar opposition or on the verge of tumbling into the Glass Jaw section. One of the most contested divisions- (Travis Walker, Steve Cunningham, Oleg Maskaev, David Haye. Gamoba)

Glass Jaw (KO'd by non-punchers, KO'd multiple times, Knocked down by non-punchers) - Fraduley, Rahman, Litzau, Wladimir Klitschko, Zab Judah, Roy Jones Jr)

Amir Khan Chin (Made from a material as of yet unknown to society, jabs get them frightened) - Amir Khan.

Obviously theres going to be debate on certain aspects. For example fighters like Chad Dawson and Kelly Pavlik could easily be placed into the shaky sections YET I know their fans will argue they have chins as good as people like Calzaghe (Pavlik 4 knockdowns in 8 years, Calzaghe 4 knockdowns in 18 years.) Roy Jones fans will insist he has to moved up into shaky, as will Wlad fans. Wlad fans will no doubt insist David Haye gets moved down into glass.

For me though personally, the interesting one was ranking Manny Pac and JMM together in average chins. I dont believe either of them are glass. Arguements against JMM will be that he's been knocked down in a lot of his major fights but he's never been KO'd. Coincidentally the only time he's been in trouble was round 1 of Pac1 where he survived 3 knockdowns to come back and gain a draw. Pac has been ko'd 3 times and was knocked down by a jab against Hussein, however more recently in his career he's shown a much stronger chin.

You cant say either of them have good chins but at the same time neither at this moment are shaky.

That is an excellent framework, with fighters categorized appropriately. You are a valuable addition to our ESB Chinchecker ranks!!! :good

I agree with your post in general, but if one looks a bit deeper, it's overly simplisitc, and you don't have all your facts straight.

We have to look at the over all context of the situations where fighters went down or were hurt. Abraham/Miranda I is a good example. If that fight had happened in Atlantic City, Vegas, New York, or any other respectable boxing town, it would have been stopped, and AA would have a TKO loss on his record. Even Smoger would have stopped that travesty. Abraham has fought exactly ONE big puncher, and he got his face busted. With a lot of help from the referee and ring side doctor he made it through, and was awarded a gift decision. That hardly qualifies a fighter for the Iron Chin Category.

Pavlik has been down 3 times not 4. Against Zuniga he got caught cold by a left hook he did not see coming. His ass hit the canvass, and he slid a good 3 feet across the ring (the slo-mo is funny as hell.) He was up at a 2 count and proceeded to obliterate Zuniga's face over the next several rounds. After the fight he admitted that he did not take zuniga seriously, and did not train hard. He vowed never to make that mistake again, and he has not. In the McKart fight one glove brushed the canvass. No one would have complained if the ref had ruled it a slip. against Taylor he acted like a dumb ass and dropped his hands and stuck his chin out. He got hit 15 times, and 8 shots were smack on flush. In the very next round he handed JT an ass whippin' that not many fighters would have survived.

Pavlik took the same shots from Miranda that turned Abraham's face into a busted up mess, and never took a step back, or even blinked. Pavlik turned Zuniga's face into something that resembled a bowl of stewed tomatos. Arthur was allowed to side step Zuniga, who was the rightful mandatory, and fight Elvin Ayala; a man with a 36% KO ratio. There is absolutely no justification for the claim that AA has an iron chin and then calling KP's chin shaky. Your not keepig things in there proper context.

    Nice post!

I would put Mayweather in the unknown chin cate.... his chin was rarely tested. I have all his fights and have only seen his legs buckled one time against corely and he was compose rally the storm. I definitely agree that his chin is solid, maybe even in good chin cate but we will have to wait and see.
