Inside fighting at its finest is such a ****ing beauty to watch. For me, it's on par with watching a boxing clinic.
Yesterday I watched Hopkins-Tarver and I forgot how versatile that performance was. He roughed em up on the inside, use side to side movement from the outside to counterpunch coming in, and did well from mid range. All ranges dominated in this fight especially inside. You rarely see a clinic as versatile as that though Ward-Froch is the best I can think of atm as far as recent times.
The best fighter i've seen at inside fighting is the guy in my avatar. He could go in and bust boxers bodies up and not get hit as much as people think he did. He wasnt very fast but hitting people to the body with the power he had will eventually wear them down and take their speed and power as someone already mentioned away. The Taylor fight is a good example of it. throughout the whole fight Taylor had his flashy flurries but in the end Chavez wore him down and took him out of there. I love seeing fights in which a guy can get inside and not get hit even though he's in his opponents face
So for Floyd throwing punches is "wasting energy" lol He can't be bothered to throw combinations. That's why he'd get beat down by the likes of Duran, SRL, Hearns, Basilio, Burley, SRR, Armstrong and true ATG's which he doesnt deserve mention alongside. Should have kept watching there's a KO in the 2nd round another thing that guys like Stewart say doesnt exist. I follow amateur boxing too and alot of the common accusations against it breeding incompatible pro fighters is hyperbole to the extreme. There's alot of guys with styles that need essentially no change, id say the majority. There's lots of body punching, good inside fighters, good punchers, etc.
Amir Khan is the perfect example of someone who doesn't have a clue as to how to fight on the inside. He looks lost, panic stricken, and uncomfortable while there. That's why he pushes or flat out runs away when a guy tries to fight on the inside. Khan while talented has the typical amateur style that is being taught today. Land flashy combos and outside punches neglect the body and stay outside at all cost. This style works for awhile but eventually get you hurt and beaten up when you run into someone who can fight inside.
it's awesome right? I was thinking about that the other day and was wondering why the elite, defensive afro americans were better in the inside than the current day mexican punchers like Rios and Margarito
Abril anyone? He had a nice inside game against Rios when he schooled him badly and pretty much won every round.:good
