    Where do you rank him?

    Top 5? Top 10?

How do you think he'd have performed against ATGs who you rank ahead of him?

What do you think Larry's best and worst performances were?

What fight should Larry have made happen that would have done the most for his legacy?

    Thoughts?

Didnt really like his style. Great jab, but I wasnt ever really that impressed with him. Could look like complete crap at times, and great in others.

He's one of those guys where i just dont like the way he throws punches.

But obviously he must be top 10.

I rank him also very high toe-to-toe, very complete fighter.

A victory over Greg Page, Gerrie Coetzee or Michael Dokes would have been great for his legacy.

Out of those 3 a victory over Dokes would have been the most sparkling. I'm not really sure why the 2 never met but I'm guessing it was a combination of boxing politics and Don King.

    He's a top 10 heavy.

Hard to pick a best performance.

Worst I would say was Tyson.

I have Holmes ranked in the top-five all time HW's. Larry was a brilliant fighter. It wasn't his fault he took over after Ali. Even if another fighter would have been in the same position as Larry, I don't think the public would have taken to them.

Holmes had it all. Power, speed, exceptional jab & recovery powers, chin, heart, determaintion etc. I redckon Holmes was kept out of the picture, so-to-speak & that's the reason why he didn't receivev a title shot until he was nearly 29.

His fight with Norton was brilliant. Both gave their all. One fianl burst by Larry in the last round, won it for him!

I think his performance against Cooney was also great. He wore down Cooney, broke him up & then sent him packing. It must have been hard for Larry being champion, because one senses the public wanted him to lose when he was champ.

Holmes was also a smart man away from boxing. He invested his money wisely & has a great deal to show for it today. The man practically owns most of Easton & the the road he lives in is called 'Larry Holmes drive'!

Awesome fighter, but a handful of ATG's would never have lost to Spinks a second time (let alone a first).

I believe Larry probably should have gotten the nod in both Spinks fights--especially the second one.

    why?

those bums beat up each other.

I think his long reign, defenses, wins over Shavers, Norton, Cooney, Snipes, Berbick and a handfull of others speak for itself.

Its obvious he beat Spinks in the second fight, and one could make the argument he won the title from Oliver McCall many years later.

I often found myself rooting against him during his prime, but once I realized he was not the same man anymore my opinion changed and I think hes an top ten all-time great. Maybe 6?:think

I wasn't a Homes fan until after he retired. For me, it's only been in retrospect that I have really appreciated how great he was. He had the unfortunate circumstance of fighting in the shadows of some of the most exciting HW's ever. If Larry were a few years older, he would have been right in the mix; kickin' ass and put notches in the win colunm right along with Ali, frazier, Foreman, Norton, and the rest. I'd put him at #2. I think only Ali would have beat him consistently.

I rank Larry at #5 based on achievement, and head-to-head I think he beats more top 10 ATG HW's than any other heavy in history. :good

Most likely politics. Dokes may have lost anyway due to lack of development of skill.

  15. Larry was a top 5 alltime heavy, i reckon Louis, Ali, Marciano, and possibly Dempsey were a step above him.
Larry was under-rated and under-appreciated in my opinion he ruled the division for 7 long years and took on and beat all comers.
Best performance- Cooney, a long battle with a bigger southpaw that was more powerful than him Larry gave him a boxing lesson..
Worst performence- Renaldo Snipes- a so-so heavyweight who almost knocked Holmes out in 1981 and him on the canvas, and was 1 punch away from winning, Larry got up and stopped him 3 rounds later..
