I think Ruiz has many skills that people do not really address, but let's review a few things first.

The Holding: While Ruiz did hold much earlier in his career, he doesn't really do that much anymore. People also should understand that when you look at Ruiz's opponents over his career, most of them are NOT infighters (barring Holyfield, Toney). Ruiz's style, while often "one punch at a time" is not all holding. While the fact that he lunges in after the right hand does invite holding, usually he holds (or "cups" with one hand and hits with the other. It's a mauling-type of fighting that isn't pretty but used in many older generations (just watch old HW fights, there's plenty of it).

One other thing I should point out is that it often takes two people to make a clinch. In many Ruiz fights, his opponents have been just as happy to clinch (Holyfield, Johnson, Oquendo, Rahman).

People should also understand that Ruiz is likely past his prime. During the Holyfield fights (which I thought he was 2-1 in), he had very good head movement for a HW and a decent jab. His hook is nothing to write home about, but his right hand is a powerful weapon, that as others describe, is "sneaky". He lulls opponents into his rhythm and they essentially get suckered into it. The head movement is far diminished at this point in his career. Also, there was a time that Ruiz ballooned in weight that IMO was detrimental to his career (he went up to the 240 range for Oquendo, Rahman).

Ruiz has good stamina for a HW. And additionally, Ruiz takes a decent punch, despite the Tua fight. He rarely gets caught clean and when in the clinches, he knows how to keep his body out of position for a clean punch.

Ruiz isn't the best fighter who ever lived, but he certainly IMO is one of the better HW's of this generation. He fought EVERYONE, win or lose. You can question how he got title shots and all that, but Ruiz has never needed "tuneups" before a big fight like Povetkin, has never ran like Kevin Johnson, has never gassed like Wladimir, has never taken an easy fight while champ like Vitali, and has never ran his mouth without backing it up like Haye.

The guy comes to fight, and is ready for 12 rounds. And considering he has not amazing talent in any area, he has made a fantastic career for himself.

He was robbed blind in his first fight with Valuev, and the second was very close. Clearly you don't know much about Ruiz if he only "sounds" ****. Ruiz is strong, has a good jab and beard (Tua aside) and is certainly more of a challenge than Valuev.

Ruiz is exactly the sort of fight Haye should be having. A knockout or even a wide points win will show that he is a top heavyweight, and the Klitschkos will have no excuse for not fighting him.

I actually read beyond this, but I shouldn't have.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Ruiz has all the skills of a high-grade clubfighter or journeyman - which is WHY he had to cheat to even be competitive at the world class level.:yep

His main ability has been to get away with illegal tactics for a decade.

And catch someone at the WBA in a compromising position.

Just think about the sheer amount of abuse he's endured from Norman Stone. Solid chin and granite ears.

If anything I'm glad at the lukewarm response to this thread. His legacy will only grow in time.

He doesn't get enough credit. Sure he's limited in many ways but he won a world title twice and has had a pretty good career, to still be challenging for titles is impressive and only the Tua loss was decisive. Don't mistake me for a Ruiz fan but he does get unfair criticism. I think he will be viewed more favourably in time.

John Ruiz is underrated by a lot of people. And I expect to read Zakman saying how he's a glorified clubfighter, and that's fine, I like Zak. :D But you don't get to be a world HW champion beltholder twice without having an effective skillset and style. Ruiz was an accomplished amateur and he obviously has enough skill to make a lot of the top 10 struggle with him. Ruiz does what's effective for him and that's what most any fighter seeks to do.
