I just watched this fight today for the first time in a while, and thought I would renew Mr. Magoo's idea of watching and reviewing classic fights together. This was an impressive performance by Benitez in winning his first title at a very young age. Any stories to share about the build-up or controversies over this SD??? Why was there never a rematch for Cervantes??? What does your personal scorecard read??? Any thoughts or insights into this fight??? I am not savy enough to post the video from you tube on here, so if you are feel free to put it up for others or just type thier names in on you tube or pop in your own DVD (my preference) and chime in!!!!

I thought it was pretty much a masterclass by the teenage Benitez. I don't recall my exact score, though.

One of Benitez best and maybe best performance in the ring. I have him rated as probably the best 140lb'er ever based mostly on this one fight. It was hard for me to give rounds to Cervantes, but the most would be 2 or 3. One of the great masterclasses in boxing history.

WOW! I thought Cervantes came on good especially in rds 9-13 and have it 9 rds to 6 in favor of benitez (But I rarely if ever score even rds.) I guess if you score even rds it could add up and be similar to judges cards...if not that seems odd to me, but perhaps others will see it similar. The judges seem to have an extremely high rate of even rds. is that normal (I don't feel like researching it right now???)

    The 3 judges had it:
Herrera 148-144 Benitez (6 for benitez 2 for cervantes) (Making 7 even rds????)
Ramirez 147-142 Benitez (8 for benitez 3 for cervantes) (Making 4 even rds???)
Celis 147-145 Cervantes (5 for cervantes 3 for Benitez) (Making 7 even rds???)

Well, Benitez won the 1st 8 rounds clearly IMO, so that locks the fight there. He also won rounds 13 through 15. I loved how he would shoot the jab and the dip down and come up top with the left hook, worked like a charm the entire fight.Did we mention Benitez was only 17!!

    Rounds 1-8:Benitez
    Round 9-10:Cervantes
    Round 11:Benitez
    Round 12: Cervantes (close)
    Round 13-15: Benitez

    Benitez 147-138

We don't disagree all that much...I just feel Cervantes did enough to win a couple of the early rds, although he did seem a little cautious and too respectful of his young challenger, had he fought differently here who know what could have happened??? And I gave him 13 as well. But I agree for a 17 y/o Benitez looked like a savy vet on this occasion, and certainly gave flashes of what he would eventually become!

    watching it now

Round 1 was close but i think Benitezs ring generalship won it for him.

Round 2 Benitez out jabbed Cervantez and hardly got landed on it was amazing by a 17 year old

Round 3: Cervantezs round. He manages to land his jab abit more and had some sucess in the opening 30 seconds also he landed a big right near the end

round 4:Benitez he was brilliant he really did well taking away Cervantezs long jab by staying just in range and slippinmg it and countering with his own ts just like what Locche did.

Round 5: Benitez again although Cervantez jab got through abit more it was a quiet even round then Benitez landed a double jab left hook combo that won the round for me.

Round 6: Just a repeat of round 4 really

Round 7: Benitez really gets going and lands great combinations he shows he is confident and in full controll the combinations are bauetiful.

Round 8: Benitez uses his jab brillaintly in this round Cervnatezs jab gets through but Benitez is countering it perfectly and throws alot more.

Round 9: Cervantezs works the body brillaintly this round and then comes over the top onto Benitezs head his jab isnt doing much this round though.

Round 10: Cervantezs jab really starts to connect this round and he starts working off of it his best round of the fight.
