I don’t think there is any hypocrisy here at all. Lewis could in theory exist as Willard did in an earlier era...but unquestionably he might also be afflicted with the same physical limitations that Willard and the men as big as him had given the limitations of training and diet of the day. modern day giants would have to adapt in fantasy matchups to the traditional methods and diets of the older times and experience the weight weakening physical limitations that hampered the vast majority of giant sized men. Which prevented them from being a relevant force to the heavyweight division for 100 years. Lennox Lewis would have been restricted by the same diet and training that all the other guys were. And it effected his size of boxer more than any other sized man. A direct example of this is the total absence of Jess Willard sized men taking over and dominating heavyweight boxing from the year 1915. It didn’t happen because the advances in sport (PEDs) had yet to come along. So it is logical to assume this is why Willard and Primo represent exceptions rather than the start of a trend.
That is merely a statement of fact. Lewis would not have been bale to bulk up to 245 in the 50s, and I doubt that he would even have tried. Marciano in the 00s would have had the option of gaining mass, as so may smaller heavyweights have done. I have no interest in trying to project what either fighter would have been like in the other's era, but I am going to assume that they would both have been significantly different.
https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/577153 Your theory would completely invalidate the existence of this guy. I don’t buy the whole “If Rocky gained 20lb, he’s finished as a fighter” argument. Especially in the era of 12 round fights, where he can sacrifice some stamina for some bulk (if he wanted to.) I never pose Marciano as different from the fighter he actually was in fantasy matchups, because I don’t believe in doing that. However, if we’re to speculate whether or not he can put on 20lb and still be an elite fighter...cmon. Of course he could.
I think that I am right in saying that Lewis lifted weights, to increase muscle mass. He would almost certainly not have done that in Marciano's era. I think that he would have been 230lbs tops.
Yeah because old school players like Babe Ruth was the trim ideal image of a man in shape. Two completely different sports. A lot of baseball players will stand around for half an hour barely moving for more than 30 seconds at a time. Rocky did not attempt to lift weights until he became a prof boxer for a few months and then gave it up when a trainer told him to stop. In other words, if he was 210 while trying out for baseball it certainly wasn't a bunch of muscle.
Here is an article by Lennox Lewis's physical conditioner. A nice balanced training regime by the sounds of it, but definitely one that would leave him bigger than he would have been in the 50s. https://www.boxingnewsonline.net/preparing-lennox-lewis/
Literally all of this is wrong. Schkor was a very scrawny kid with very small shoulders and not a lot of muscle on his arms and legs. Lewis was built very thick with a wide chest, big biceps, and thick legs. https://boxrec.com/media/images/thumb/5/59/Skhor.Johnny.jpg/200px-Skhor.Johnny.jpg Even Lennox in his early 20's was a much more impressive phsyical specimen than Shkor in the 220+ range https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/tough-love-1.png?w=681&h=383&crop=1 Contrary to popular belief he was not fat or obese at 230+ https://i.pinimg.com/originals/35/12/d2/3512d2edad9e8b361bf66672ccbea21c.jpg It wasn't until the end of his career against Tyson and Vitali that Lewis started to get really lazy and fat. Even if for the sake of argument Lennox was 220 in the 50's he would still be by far the strongest physical powerhouse anyone would have seen since Jefferies. If he had the same style he'd still be a dominant force. Holmes did not lift weight in the 80's and was still a very trim and athletic 220 range. Foreman in the 70's did old school strength training like push ups, digging holes with a shovel, chopping trees, etc. He actually weighed more than 230 lbs and his trainers made him trim down to 220 for speed. Even in the amateurs he would walk around way above 230. There is no evidence he took PED's in the 70's. Do you think THIS guy would be skinny with thin arms and a thin neck if he was born in the 20's: https://images.wsj.net/im-161385?width=1280&size=1 The mental gymnastics is something to behold in this thread. What rock have you been living under for the past 50 years? You do realize African American athletes are known for being powerhouse athletes? You do know they existed back then too, and a lot of them were denied access to the championship to the color line or ended up getting recruited for basketball/football? Ever heard of Wilt Chamberlain? You do realize there were in fact heavyweights back in the day who weighed as much as Lennox/Foreman/etc without being obese such as Carnera/Willard? Why would the rules suddenly change for the African American athletes? Nothing you guys are saying is making any sense.
This is a lie. Marciano worked out with weights prior to going pro and only stopped once his trainers said to. He wanted to be the strongest kid in the neighborhood from an early age
Lol thanks for proving my point. Foreman weighed around 230 and TRIMMED DOWN to 215. Just as Marciano weighed 215 and trimmed down to 185-190. This is t rocket science.
Big difference between lifting weights and being a stiff 210 lbs and lifting weights to become an explosive fast twitch athlete. Rocky being some tough kid in the neighborhood lifting weights on his own without a proper weight training regiment or trainer would make him a stiff and slow plodder. You can't turn that around and speculate he would be just as functional while maintaining the same work rate and stamina of his 185 pound self.
