Lewis was at top for 11 years.

Ali lost to a 7 fight novice....a really bad fighter in Spinks.

Holmes competition is weak...Tyson 3 or 4 years later destroys the very same comp.

Louis comp and Holmes for that matter were the american heavyweights titles not world champions...Louis fought german max....and that was it.

Marciano never faced anyone above 210 pounds for a heavyweight title fight./

Both avenged. Re: first Walcott fight; have you seen all the footage then? Because from what's available, neither man seems to really impose their authority on the fight.

 

Holyfield, Bowe and Moorer at various times might dispute an 11 year reign for Lewis. I'm not sure if it's a reign while he's on the canvas either. It's not totally comparable when it's 1 belt vs 4.

 

Moorer would struggle with Lewis. He's have trouble getting his jab going and everything worked off that for him.

 

Lewis would definitely win that, I just wouldn't agree that Lewis had a 11 year reign as the definite #1 of the division.

Even his second tier of wins is impressive, Galento, Farr, Buddy Baer, Pastor, Godoy, Nova, JH Lewis, as well as defending THE World Heavyweight championship whilst clearing out the division. If a fight was tough, second time round it was easy. Arguably the greatest puncher of all time. His ring record is stacked with accolades.

Some tricky lighter fighters, some big beasts, a good mix IMO :thumbsup

 

Rocky Marciano was 5'9 and weighed a pudgy 185 pounds.......forget resumes... on a head to head basis he gets squatted...Sonny Liston was twice the fighter.

This is romantic rose tinted glasses of a fighter who reigned on top for a paltry 3 yrs.

Hell John ****ing Ruiz fought at the top for longer.

In all seriousness....ive seen every great heavyweight ever fight.......on DVD, VHS, big screen, small screen....i know how tall they were and how heavy they were.....I know what training methods they employed and know exactly what strenghts and weakness they all had....and in reality everyone before Sonny Liston belong to the first phase of boxing.

Its totally unfair comparing both.......totally different worlds...apart.

The rest you could put in any order....but the real stand outs were Joe Louis and Jack Johnson.

After the second world war....the world changed in a big way, the 1950 paved the way for television, mass communication went through hype drive so knowledge was spread...the americans had the best trainers, hence why they dominated the heavyweight belt for so long, it would still take a good 40 years untill the 1990s for the rest of the world to catch up.

Now you have countless, TV, Internet, Newspapers, Magazines.


Before if a fighter wanted to know how Joe Louis fought he would have had to go and actually watch him, to travel to the USA would have taken him weeks.

 

Mate i watched the fight on VHS, i remember Walcott winning the fight easily, the crowd thought walcott won, and Louis thought he had lost...


Lewis was on top for 11 yrs...im not talking about undisputed undefeated...im talking performing at a high level for over a decade....rocky stint was 3 ys...add 7 more and he would have lost to ali and liston without a doubt.

 

Nor would I, but apart from Moorer (no biggie) Bowe (didn't want to fight Lennox) and Byrd (some claim a duck here :nono No duck, not viable at any time IMO but I've heard a few say Lennox didn't fancy it, any sources on this? No biggie again) and Ike (Ikes fault )

Lennox did fight pretty much everyone, and quite a few different styles. I would agree with what you're saying but also say he arguably proved himself the most formidable out of the 90s HWs :good

 

2 weeks travel to see Louis? Depends where you set off from, I doubt it took Walcott that long to get a seat...;O)

 

Braddock? He wasnt even rated then so **** off saying he is a good win now, Carnera? Jesus he the same level as Tye Fields.....I will say Baer was a good fighter though but mentally on and off.

That era was so ****ed up becuase the MOB had a huge control.....read Jake La Motta book, hell even get newspapers...and see what they say....that era was poor, the world was poor, you didnt have top level athletes like now.
