A friend of mine sent me this message on Facebook. He makes a pretty convincing arguement. I'll post it here. I bolded some of the parts that stood out to me.

    What do you think?

Lewis while a very good champion never had an opponent with the speed or movement of Ali. Ali's movement alone wouldn't allow Lewis to get set to throw those power punches. Ali's handspeed would keep Lewis off balance and keep him out of rythm. Ali never had a problem fighting bigger opponents. His amazing reflexes enabled him to throw his punches and retreat before being countered. Defensively he just wasn't around to be hit. No, I don't see Lewis beating a prime Ali.

As good as Lennox was,I just cannot envisage him beating a prime Ali. He'd put up a decent scrap though, but lose convincingly over the distance.

"I think Lewis patiently jabs Ali all night until he catches him with a combination that would finish him."

    - not sure about that.

"Ali never learned the fundamental of boxing."

    - Hmmm.

Ali wouldn't stand a chance against Lewis.

I think it's pretty meaningless to use Lewis best perfomances and one of Ali's lesser ones if you want to make a comparison.

We could as well point to Bruno outjabbing Lewis. "How could someone who's outjabbed by Bruno stand a chance of jabbing with Ali" etc?

You at least have to take both guys on their best nights.

Bokaj makes a good point, but perhaps doesn't go far enough.

Lewis sets a very specific set of problems. Who knows how Ali would fight him? Who, anywhere in the world would have predicted Ali's strategy for Foreman, or Frazier III? To a lesser degree, Williams or Foster? He's a strategical master capable of springing a surprise on everyone in the world, never mind the fighter in the opposite corner.

Lewis as a "clever" fighter gets overated. Remember that Holyfield was able to force his fight onto Lewis twice. Lennox is clever, but i've seen him bossed for strategy on film. Who bossed Ali, strategically?

Lewis is ultra-solid in terms of technical prowess, tempo etc., and that does set Ali some very very unique problems. I think based upon what is on film, say, Ali versus Bonovena and Lewis versus Tua, you could track down reasons why Lewis might beat Ali on points, but...no way would that be my pick.

Yeah, but with the dreads, McGrain, we're talking the Lennox with the dreads.

Lewis would win and this is coming from a massive Ali fan. Ali's defense often relied on being taller to slip back from punches, this made him very open to long fast jabs and left hands in general. Hence Lewis's jab with his 82inch reach gives Ali nightmares. Ali has the ATG speed but Lewis's speed and ability to pull the trigger is excellent and well underrated. Lewis would be the fastest most athletic Ali faced, much stronger than Ali, much harder hitting and the most accurate puncher he faced.

Lewis himself would have problems with Alis speed and movement. It would be a close close fight.

O/T didnt Ali say Lennox was the greatest? Maybe complimentary or maybe he genuinely thought Lewis was the greatest HW.

When I got to the part about Bowe being an average HW that just happened to have Holyfield`s number, I wondered if I was reading the beginning of ****, then I read Norton won all 3 fights vs Ali & decided to do myself the favour of quitting reading.

On the subject of the thread title - The very best Muhammad Ali would decision the very best Lewis... to fast of hand & foot, too elusive, too smart & better technically.

There was apparently, before my time, an epic thread on genral where one poster was trying to make the argument that Lewis's hair -non-drealocked- played a roll in making the cut on Vitali's face so much worse. That being the case, Lews should never have got rid of is dreadlocks.

I think it should have been mentioned in the Wlad vs. Ali thread.
I also think Louis , Vitali and Wlad should be considered moderate to big favorites to win a decision against Ali , especially when referring to fights no longer than 12 rounds.
And it takes a huge idiot to believe boxrec and other resources as well regarding tale of the tape stats after actually watching more fights than I did.
Sure , Liston would outjab both Klitschkos and Lewis to submission one after another in the same night and then brawl 5 gorillas simultaneously and knock them out immediately after being interviewed by I don't know.
And Tyson would be helpless against liston as he was just an inferior version of the gutsy Floyd Patterson with even the same trainer !
And then you have Ali handling them all as he handled Terrell , he knew how to deal with size what can I say.
And Joe louis would stop David Tua at about the 2:50 of the 12th round after rising from the deck as a result of taking an almost flush left hook. Tua was just a hyped hairstyled version of Tony Galento.
In fact Galento was a much braver , stronger and better conditioned .
