Lewis also turned down a $13.5 million guarantee prior to that. Who the hell was Lennox Lewis in 1996 to turn that down? He'd been KO'ed by McCall, took a couple years finding his way back and was coming off a very close decision against Mercer. A virtual nobody in terms of the revenue. That offer was more than twice as much as Bruno got for Tyson to take the WBC strap off him, and he was the 'Champion'. Tyson hadn't beaten a world ranked opponent since September of '96. Pretty easily canceled out based on styles alone. Tyson already had nearly as many career fights as Lewis did before he even went to prison in 1991, had been pro since '85. They almost aren't even of the same era.
Tyson beat Golota in 2000. Golota was still a ranked fighter at the time. He beat Frans Botha in 1999, who was also world ranked at the time. Also the reason had so many fights before he went to prison was because he was thrown so many bums in quick succession early on his career, whereas Lewis was British and European champ in his 15th fight. By his 20th fight he was British,Commonwealth and European champ, whereas it took Tyson 25 fights to fight anyone with a pulse.
Tyson earned a heavyweight championship belt a year after he started. Lewis was fighting eurotrash. If Tyson fought bums then who is Lewis who fought the "bums" that Tyson already beat? You are comparing the greatest talent boxing has ever seen to a guy who was literally KOed by one punch TWICE in his prime. There's no comparison ... imagine what a shot like this would do to the fragile paper jaw of Lewis This content is protected
Beating bums that Tyson already beat? Sorta like the way Tyson beat Holyfield twice and then Lewis beat Holyfield....oh...wait
Props to Lewis for retiring and staying retired. (BYW he speaks better in this interview than he ever did as a boxing announcer). I've heard Lewis sing the "at my worst" and "look at his face" tune many times. What people need to do is scroll to the end of the VK fight, when the judges stop it: Lewis is completely gassed, out on his feet. He shows up at the post fight interview wearing SUNGLASSES because his own face was swollen and his eyes blackened. He will always have that win on his record and it was won fair and square...but why does he always disrespect Vitali's effort? It's not very manly of him to do so and actually against his usual nature so you know it bothers his self esteem.
Lewis fights against Tyson's leftovers: Tyrell Biggs: Lewis fought him in 91 after Tyson already KOed him in 87 Donovan Ruddock : Lewis fought him just 2 fights after Tyson beat his head in for 19 rounds, dropping him several times. Tony Tucker: Fought Lewis in 93, 6 years after Mike already beat him Frank Bruno: Fought him after Tyson and even post prison Tyson beat him again more impressively than Lewis. Bruno is also on record saying he'd rather fight Lewis than Tyson any day. Francois Botha: Fought Lewis a year after Tyson brutally KOed him. Difference is that Tyson fights these guys when they are a threat and Lewis only goes after them after they have been defeated. Tyson beats bums yet Lewis fights an even worst version of these bums.
"When the Intimidator fails to intimidate, he becomes the intimidated." - José Torres on Tyson I went sleep thinking I would have to find this thread on page 5 or 6. Good work man.
british homo was one of the best ,but he got ktfo twice, by bums ,ducked tyson and never gave Vit a rematch.
You do realise that pretty much all those guys had been defeated by other fighters before Tyson ever fought them right? So was Tyson fighting those other guys leftovers? Was Tyson fighting Jacos left over when he fought Ruddock? So on a scale of 1-10,how much does the fact that Tyson got handled by Holyfield, who then went on to get beaten by Lewis cause you pain?
