People may have thought Grant was a top contender at the time but the available evidence strongly points otherwise.
I easily found 10 guys I feel would have beaten Grant at the time without really doing much digging. If anyone disagrees with any of the picks I would love to hear their reasoning.

As far as the size of Lewis's competition goes, people like you constantly bring up the size of Marciano's competition, if that's fair game than the same is true for Lennox.

So why didn't Grant accomplish more in his career? Why did these guys all go on to have better careers and beat better fighters? hmmmmm

The people at Ring Magazine like other people are prone to making mistakes. I see no reason we should take their opinion as fact especially given some of their picks seem pretty silly even without the benefit of hindsight. Phil Jackson, as it has been pointed out didn't beat anyone highly rated to get his rating.

No, but they were smaller on average than the guys today and its perfectly reasonable to note that fact.

    How about your opinion?

    How does Grant do against

    Vitali Klitschko
    Wladimir Klitschko
    David Tua
    Evander Holyfield
    Oliver McCall
    Mike Tyson
    Hasim Rahman
    John Ruiz
    Chris Byrd
    Henry Akinwande

Those are the guys he has to be better than

I will remember to consult your "feelings" next time I bet on a fighter.

Cooney is considered one of Holmes' best wins, one of his most dangerous opponents. Who the hell did Cooney beat after the Holmes' fight?

Fred Fulton is considered on of Dempsey's best wins, one of his most dangerous opponents. Who did Fred beat afterward?

Not yet. But it is certainly in the cards for today.

They were both short, highly ranked at one time and hit really hard... and both really liked cocaine. (Brewster still claims the hardest he was hit was by Butler). Sorry, I couldn't find an exact analogy for Tyson during that time period. That's why we try to draw analogies based on similarities. Like the ones I listed above.

That one tricked put 4 future or ex champs to sleep.

Can we count the guys who began fighting as an adult. I'll start with Joe Goddard, Jess Willard, Carnera, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston... maybe you can finish the list. My fingers are getting tired.

Didn't some no-hoper quit job take a prime Tyson into deep water and drown him? Something about 40-1 odds, but my brain is foggy.

Wait. I've already been crowned the greatest Tyson apologists. Can I possibly hold both titles at once or do I need to drop one in a trash can?

I am withholding comment on this.

In that case you should be able to present an argument as to how Grant beats the guys I listed.

How does Grant deal with Vitali for example?

Small heavies ? Maybe Butler was Lewis' heaviest opponent and Tua and Tyson were heavier than lot of
Lewis'opponents (for example Mavrovic,Holyfield 2X,Briggs,Jackson ) Not to mention the prime Tyson was
significantly lighter than the Lewis version but he was faster, stronger, much more skilled, hungrier(haha !!!) with great stamina and better mental state . Prime Tyson would destroy the "easy to hit" Lewis' glass chin easily.
(And don't forget ! McBride or Danny Williams knocked out Tyson quicker than Lewis this prove the his
Tyson win has ZERO sport value.)

That 40-1 odd guy boxed pretty good, footwork , jab, combinations, even got off the canvass to win...in contrast Hasbeen and McCracken only landed one shot and it was over.......there was no boxing brilliance involved, as a matter of fact Hasbeen looked utterly the no hoper he always was before he landed on glass.

Trivia: Who was the ONLY champ in ANY weight class who was not only ONCE but TWICE KO'ed by ONE single punch by genuine Palookas ?
