it is a fact that tyson ducked lewis when tyson wasnt far off prime. so don't say a prime tyson would have beat lewis.because tyson didn't want it
Tyson didnt give a **** after he got pushed Tyson handled Lewis in sparring when they were both up and coming
who says that was a peak lewis though? only a year later (in his next fight) he fought klitschko and then everybody started claiming lewis was past his prime. did his prime end between the tyson and klitschko fights? i'd favour lewis to beat tyson at any point in the 90s
they sparred in 1984 in Catskill Boxing Club Lewis was 18 and tyson was 17 Tyson handled him in Sparring according to kevin rooney
Cosidering Tyson came into the fight in woeful physical condition & given that his mental state was ***ile at the time, its an achievement that he lasted until the eight. Tyson was so shot by the time Lewis beat him its not even funny. People are quick to say Tyson was Lewis' greatest victory, but how can beating a guy who was on medication at the time & who's skills eroded so much, be his best win? Tyson would have blatantly taken care of business against Lewis had they fought in their primes!
according to lewis's then trainer. tyson started getting to lewis in early sessions. lewis's trainer ask lewis if he wanted to pull out of sparring he said no and began too get comfortable with tyson's style and out box him
Tyson had a helluva chin, took bombs from good punchers. Ruddock landed the "smash" on him a few times and couldnt hurt Mike.
who was lewis trainer at tht time then? if tua (5 ft 10), mcall (6 ft 2), ray mercer (6ft) can hold their own with an established Lewis then saying Lewis would outbox a Tyson (5 ft 11), one of the best heavyweights to have that kind of head movement and reflexes during his youth doesnt make much sense
You are entitled to your own opinion & I respect that, but imo, Lewis doesn't even get into any rhythm against a peak Tyson. People say Tyson is overrated, but in respect of his boxing skills & defensive skills, I feel he is underrated. The way Lewis used to paw with the jab, do you think that would have had any impact on a peak Tyson? Tyson has more variety than Lewis. Lewis had a massive right hand, good left uppercut & the jab, which he often negelcted in that he just pawed with it, unlike a guy like Sonny Liston. Lewis would not have been able to deal with the volume of punches that would be coming his way!
1. Sparring as teenagers = 0 no matter what happened. In '89/'90 this isn't a contest; Lewis was barely a pro, Tyson was a 30 fight world champ. 2. No one (sane) claims Lewis' Tyson win as his best, if even top 5. A solid performance over a puncher's chance fighter who manned up, tried hard but didn't have the tools at that point to compete. It just made sure no one accused Lewis of ducking Tyson in case of getting clocked a la Rahman. And made ALOT of money. 3. '91/'92 Lewis vs '91/'92 Tyson... great fight, tough call. Neither "prime", Tyson probably closer. I gotta favour Tyson as I think Lewis still had a fair bit to fully work out in his game and dealing with Tyson's relentlessness would be a whole new ballgame for him. Potential for a Tyson steamroll, but most likely a mid-round TKO for me. Lewis would need the "fight of his life" to that point to pull it out. 4. '89 Tyson vs '99/'00 Lewis. This one's the argument. Amazing that 10 years separate their prime years. Edge to Tyson since you can't even call him inexperienced at that age and there's no reason to expect him to fade if the fight goes long. Lewis showed more susceptibility to being banged out than Tyson to being boxed at that point.
