:goodAgreed. I think I turned the sound off for Hopkins vs Wright because Jim Watt was drunk or something, but I soon turned it back on. It's not the same without.
I haven't watched the fight in a while, but from what I remember, Mercer started out very strong but then faded down the stretch. I believe I had Lewis winning by about two rounds - so 6-4 in rounds. It was a close, action-packed fight, but Mercer just couldn't keep up his activity level past about the 8th round....
He really didn't need a lot of consistency in my opinion. Almost every single time Lennox would hit him with something he'd fire right back, and Lennox was always affected more then Mercer. You can't fault that coupled with coming forward and being the aggressor the entire fight. It earned him points in my book.
I watched this recently and thought Mercer was a bit stiff to be honest. He consistently out-jabbed the bigger man landed a lot of big flush right hands over Lewis's jab as well.I agree that Ray's workrate dropped a little late and a lot of rounds were very close, plus Lewis landed some dynamite uppercuts and rights as well,so a draw wouldn't have been a bad result either to be honest. But I thought Mercer won 96-94 in a great, great fight.
Are you saying I'm Bruno obsessed? That, somehow, I find it impossible to say a single sentence without mentioning the great Frank Bruno? Well, just as Frank Bruno's jab never missed its mark, your point missed the mark entirely. Unlike, say, Bruno's cute left hook.
I had Lewis winning by a two-point margin, but, interestingly, I have a scorecard that's almost the complete opposite of DamonD's. Round 1 Lewis Round 2 Mercer Round 3 Lewis Round 4 Mercer Round 5 Mercer Round 6 Lewis Round 7 Lewis Round 8 Lewis Round 9 Mercer Round 10 Lewis
I scored it just the other day too. I couldn't recall my old tally, but I believe I had it by a slightly wider margin, oddly enough.
I don't think it really matters, to tell anyone the truth. As great as Lewis was, this fight was a rather indecisive victory over a man who's career had been on the downslide for a long time. Even if Lewis had deserved to win say 6-4, he still barely got by a 35 year old veteran who hadn't fought in a year, and had not beaten a ranked fighter in closer to 5 years. Not to mention, was coming off a very bad streak which included losses and draws to Marion Wilson, Jesse Ferguson and an old Holmes. Sorry to regurgitate something that's been brought up countless times, and I'll probably get my head bit off by at least two or three people that I can think of, but this was not a great win for Lennox Lewis.
I think the most defining part of me scoring it for Mercer was his jabbing. Almost every one connected, and almost every one snapped Lennox's head back. Double and triple jabs. Impressive stuff.
I thought Mercer fought one of his better efforts but definately lost the fight. Lennox pulled away in the second half. I had it 7 - 3 Lewis .
I had it a draw. Round 1: Mercer Round 2: Lewis Round 3: Mercer Round 4: Mercer Round 5: Lewis Round 6: Mercer Round 7: Lewis Round 8: Lewis Round 9: Mercer Round 10: Lewis 95-95 Draw.
