Agreed, mate. I said this earlier on the thread.

They can’t all be like Anthony Joshua, banging everyone out in front of huge crowds after only a few fights. If you have size and power in the heavyweight division, you can cover over the improvements you have to make which AJ has done & he’s improved massively as a fighter since his headline fight with Cornish. However, in the lower weight divisions power isn’t enough to get you through.

Ritson wasn’t himself last night. A few more people have pointed it out since but I think the occasion overwhelmed him. It reminded me of Johnny Nelson’s book when he talked about his first world title challenge against De Leon in Sheffield. He said he almost felt paralysed with anxiety and no matter what his corner said to him he just couldn’t absorb it and each round just went with a blink of an eye. He simply didn’t do enough. Nearly everyone in Sheffield (and the U.K.) turned their back on him and he went from their next big hope to ‘in the dustbin’ in 36 minutes.

I still believe in this kid. He just froze imo. He showed great heart staying on his feet in round 5. He will come again, he’ll be a more savvy, experienced fighter from this.

I don't think people will understand how much Ritsons life will of changed going into this fight.
The kid has gone from near on obscurity to local superstar in no time at all.
For the first time last night, he headlined in front of 9000. Most of those tickets, Lewis will of done himself, by hand.
There will of been times when he was dropping a bunch off at someone's local at the other side of town, only to get there and the buyer is late by a hour. He will stop and talk and take photos etc with all of those he drops tickets off to.
Selling those tickets will take loads out of Lewis but he's new to this side of the game and so are his team. He is labelled as one of the lads and he wants to uphold this image that's why he will of personally tried to deliver as many of those tickets as possible.
Then there's the media...all of a sudden and even more so now he's headlining the local arena, everyone wants to interview him. Not just boxing related media's but local media's such as BBC and itv, not to mention radio stations.
His team are also pretty novice in this area as well.
What i have spoken about above is a whole new dimension that Lewis has to incorporate into his game.
He has been moved a little too fast imo and he paid the price last night.
Last night should of been more about preparing a fighter for the big time, that's a development in itself.
Lewis isn't used to been the centre of attention, he's a local lad that's come through the small halls. He hasn't the benefit of been an x olympian and has got to where he is in a short period of time, without too much experience.
I don't know what Eddie was thinking when he had Lewis out on that other bill the other month. I know a few of us on here mentioned it but that was just stupid from Eddie.
I think that a maybe his corner wasn't up to par last night but I'm not sure on that, I didn't hear everything they said to Lewis at the end of each round but I suppose the proof is in the pudding and Lewis never changed tactics really.
Towards the end Lewis was tucking up and letting pat throw so he could open him up for counters but whether this was tactical or not I'm not sure.
I'm gutted tbh. I really like Lewis Ritson

I had a feeling ritsons opponent would be a handful, I’d only seen him on the pads on an ifl video but could tell he’d be good.
Reminded me a bit when Khan was about to face Prescott and they showed him on the pads in the dressing room before I could tell straight away he was handy

 

The warning signs were there with Ritson. Too stationary, one dimensional, no head movement. His strength and power were only going to take him so far and to take him to a British title for keeps isn't too bad at all.

Now if he wants to go further he'll need to make some improvements and there's no reason why he can't. Agreed with Paul Smith on the commentary that he needs to be throwing some combos when he's up close instead of always just looking for one big single shot. A new trainer and corner team could work wonders as well. He needs to add to his game. Good fighters learn from their defeats and I hope Ritson does.

 

I was surprised how ineffective his body shots were against Patera, didn't slow him down at all.

 

Patera doesn't struggle with the weight. The guys that struggle with the weight usually struggle when they're shipping bodyshots. The body absorbs a lot more energy if weight cutting isn't done right. The guys who don't kill themselves to make weight usually take bodyshots better.
or lads that are making weight by means of outdated ideas, I.e sweatsuits/saunas they can pay the price when they are dragged into deep waters. The bodyshots hurt more

 

Nice to hear all the goodwill to him from everyone on here cos he seems a genuine kid. You could tell in his post fight interview how much it meant to have all those fans come to see him and he probably feels he let them down but he will always get well supported I'm sure. He's got plenty of scope for improvement.

Anyone else think Hearn might have robbed Ritson to teach him a lesson about disrespecting him? Saw a video last week there Ritson said Hearn could do with losing a few founds. No doubt this hurt Hearns ego. Me and a lot of the unbiased users in the RBR had Ritson winning on our cards.

 

The RBR mob must have been sniffing glue and wearing Black and White tinted glasses.

 

I had it 7 5 for patera and I'm a geordie. I love Ritson but he got beat last night.
