Lewis Ritson exposed

Not a fan of how people are ready to write off fighters careers after a loss. It's ridiculous.

Ritson jab is pretty decent but yeah he needs to throw combinations and learn more variety with his offence. I am not ready to say he can't improve.

Let's see if he learns from this defeat before we give up on his career as a fighter

 

He was pushing his shorts down and taking big breaths from the 1st round. A sure sign he was too wound up and loading-up on too many/all his shots.
Corner should have told him to take his time, work off jab, KO will come etc etc. Basic sh1t. A classic example of focus, good game plan and execution winning the day for the less gifted fighter.

 

Haven't watched the fight yet, will try to at some point. My assumption is that Ritson couldn't blast the guy out of there and ran out of ideas. I heard Andy Lee (who is a very good analyst) mention that you can get used to someone's power if they become predictable. I guess that's what happened with Ritson.

He's still a good fighter and I expect him to build back before winning at this sort of level. He was always cursed once that awful 'Geordie Golovkin' moniker was thrust upon him...

 

Unbelievably overrated. It was obvious he would get exposed.

 

You raise a good point re: Geordie Golovkin, moniker.
Sometimes labels like this can go to a fighters head. I'm not saying it has with Lewis but you do raise a good point.

 

He doesn't strike me as the type to be affected by that but I think it affects what people expect from him, and failure to do so will seriously harm rep. Which it shouldn't, really.

Couldn't believe the odds on Patera, he's a good fighter.

Lets not forget, this time last year Ritson wasn't even operating at British level.

This will be the best thing to happen to Ritson.

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread I don’t think Eddie helped him by a) putting him on in Birmingham just a few weeks ago and b) thrusting him in to the limelight here in Newcastle like he was already a superstar.

I’m willing to see how he comes back from this.

 

Good points mate but I still have him down as a very limited fighter.

Saturday was a dreadful performance and reminded me of a lower level example of Cleverly when he got found out and destroyed by Kovalev. (Still laughing about Terry O'Connor carrying a bashed up Clev to his corner and allowing him to continue next round.)

Very lucky that he was up against a light puncher on Sat as I feel that he has a couple of brutal defeats coming his way against decent punchers.

 

Well yeah, we agree there, he is obviously one dimensional. But I think a lot of people thought that one dimension would carry him further than this.

Ritson hardly got bashed senseless the way Cleverly did, but then Patera is certainly no Kovalev lol. Would agree that the way he visibly wilted on taking some of Patera's bodyshots does not bode well for the future.

 

Not a big fan of the father/Son trainer combination. I know you have had success stories before but I feel unless the fighter is supremely talented these relationships can disguise flaws or on both sides it becomes hard to be objective.

 

Calzaghe Snr and Jnr were great together but Eubanks are a disaster.

 

The thing is if you're going to stand right in front of opponents in the pocket, you either have to have good head and upper body movement, or be extremely durable.
He falls short on both.
