I don't think it can be appreciated just how enormous it was unless you lived in the weeks building up to it. Because it was a bit damp, it's forgotten now, but it's probably the last fight your mate's granny had an opinion about. Was colossal. I have this on now while I'm "working". Some of the details boggle the mind. Because they rented houses close to each other, they had to enter a negotiation about who would move - the danger of them running into each other "on the street" according to the broadcast (As if that would happen) too high to risk. In the end, both moved. Lovely little details from the biggest fight of my lifetime.
Quite a decent analysis from Samuel L Jackson, though he's a bit swept away with Mike Tyson, which many were (i won a lot of money on this fight). Still, he described the first round just about, and he picks Lennox. Next up, Manny Pacquiao. Pretty crazy, Pacquiao and Tyson on the same card, almost unbelievable. Here, he's taking on Jorge Julio. It was the first time I ever saw Manny, and I remember it well, though obviously I had *no clue* that he would go on to be what he was.
Manny snatching, but you can already see the accomplishment, the temperament, the power. What a gorgeous card tbh.
Man, I forgot this, there's a huge tailback of fans because of the excess security in the line outside the place. Poor. $2400 ringisde.
Holyfield picks Tyson - "Styles make fights. I truly believe that Tyson's style sets off Lewis's style. I don't think Lewis has the passion, the fire...Tyson will throw a lot of combinations...the man moving back tends to get hit...his bobbing and weaving and jumping in there off key...once he comes into you he explodes into you, just like a cobra...Tyson got spring in the leg he got quicker legs. I don't jump off the back, he will, he takes more chances than I take. He's unpredictable, a man that take chances is always going to connect on one eventually." Holyfield wants to fight Tyson again so bad
Mike walks the ring to a filthy DMX track...different days. This content is protected Stops for a brief lecture from a police officer/security guard doesn't look pleased. Looks warm though Looks a bit trapped at the moment, this police officer is an absolute dickhead and knows he is on tv. Something to do with the size of the entourage. Stfu, damn. Here comes Lewis, very loose, no robe, no nothing, picture of concentration. Security not ****ing with him I don't think. yeah they are. Unreal. Maybe staged? This content is protected
It's so weird seeing Jimmy Lennon and Buffer in the same ring, at the same time, handing the announcing back and forth. Lots of messing about though, both men probably have cooled a bit. Makes Mike's first round even more impressive.
I remember that the fight was huge, and a lot of people who should have known better picked Tyson. It was seen as being the last piece of the puzzle in terms of Lewis's legacy. It was also seen as something of a good vs evil fight, owing to Tyson's pre fight antics. The media portrayed Lewis as the respectable face of boxing, and Tyson as the street thug champion. The morning after the fight, a previously skeptical press was proclaiming Lewis as one of the greats. I remember somebody asking Frank Warren what was next for Lewis. He said something like: "There is this guy called Chris Byrd who some people have accused him of avoiding. There is also a guy called Klitschko (didn't say which one) who is a Ukrainian working out of Germany, who might be ale to give him a good fight. Apart from that he is just mopping up the best of a weak crop."
Speculation naturally turned to what was next for Tyson. His finances were bad at the time, so he obviously wasn't going to retire. There was serious talk of a big money fight with Roy Jones, but ironically it lost credibility after Jones lost to Tarver. In the end Tyson chose to take a few fights against Commonwealth level opponents, to build up interest for a last big fight, and it turned out that he couldn't even deliver at that level any more. I think that in hindsight him and Jones should have come to terms, before they were both exposed.
This is strange. Didn´t Holyfield somewhere else earlier say that the MT he fought wasn´t the kid from the 80s? Maybe got blurred to what Rahman did to Lewis at the time, as well as Holyfield going to say in other words: "I could have done better." Keep in mind prior to that fight, Tyson showed up at his heaviest ever (239 3/4).
Tyson wanted it. He threatened to eat Lewis’s children. Careful what you wish for. Lennox went all Alexander on his arse.
