Just rewatched the Lewis V Bruno fight and should Micky Vann have halted give Bruno time to recover because of the way Lewis was holding his face with his left glove and hitting Bruno with his right, I know he did briefly stop it but you could see Lewis push him out the way to carry on the assault and did the exact same thing before the fight was stopped, surely if a fighter gets five mins for a low blow the same should have happended her and do you think it would have made a difference to the outcome because Bruno was causing Lewis problems

Agree, it was a horrible tactic on Lewis part, and borderline DQ material. He did the same thing to Mike Grant I believe, and was never penalized for it.

I hinted at this in another thread but lets be blunt, Lewis could be a very dirty fighter and wasn't shy about following back on such tactics when he got in trouble. And yes, the first Grant knockdown actually came from a hold and punch to the back of the head. Grant was also causing Lewis problems in the opening seconds, knocking him back with a right hand as I recall. I'm not going to open the Vitali can of worms but yeah...

Lewis was definitely a dirty *******, the thing is he wasn't perpetually dirty. So when he was repeatedly warned for holding against Tyson he adjusted. He was a cerebral fighter in pursuit of every possible advantage.

Its only illegal if the referee pulls you up on it.

On the fight, it was a great one, Bruno was at least two rounds ahead at the time of the stoppage, it sums up his career really.

Lewis showed a killer instinct in this fight that i loved...but it was brutal...Bruno was finished at this point of the fight I think...once his stamina was gone or his chin was dented he never really came back to do much against quality opponents and Lennox was on a mission to get his title back....

    Don't they all?

Ali holding the back of head and pushing his opponents heads down, Holyfield's head butts, it goes on and on.

Holmes did it all night to Mercer. All fighters have fouls in their repertoire, I wouldn't say Lewis was especially dirty although he did hold a lot.

Watch this mess. Amatuer boxing at its finest. Particularly the finishing blow to end the fight.

Why shouldn't Lewis take advantage of Grant's lack of professional nous?
I don't particularly have a problem with what Lewis did.

Because you cant hold your opponents head down with one arm while you throw an uppercut with the other. Thats a blatant foul. Lewis should have stepped back and then delivered his shot, not arm bar him with one hand and then throw the uppercut with his other hand. He did the same thing to Bruno only delivering a different punch.

That was blatantly illegal, Im a big Lewis fan but that was brutal, grounds for DQ perhaps. Mercante Jr is a pretty weak ref IMO, not really up to it, not even a point deduction.

Lewis couldnt get inside his reach so he just took the dirty option when it presented itself, he probably would have stopped Grant in later rounds anyway but a tainted victory in my opinion.
