Bruno, Mercer and Holyfield all gave Lewis tough fights too. And when Rahman came up against a out of shape, unmotivated Lewis, he did what Vitali couldn't do and took his chance and knocked Lewis out.
As soon as Vitalis corner started putting butterfly stitches in his cut the match was over - Butterfly stitches are allowed only after the contest. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhIRC9Jm-94[/ame] 7:00 they are using butterfly stitches only after that the fight is called off - There was no intention of Vitalis corner allowing him to continue
First of all that was a great fight - last great title fight at HW. Klitschko outboxed Lennox, but on the other hand Lennox landed harder punches and was more accurate. If I remember correctly in each round Klitschko landed more punches, but Lennox usually was doing more damage. And this is professional boxing where quality is more important than quantity. In my opinion Lennox was surprised, beacuse he was the first time in the career being easily outboxed. However he chose a good tactic, so he won that fight fair. If Vitali didnt have the cuts on his face, he would have won the fight on points. He was in a great condition in that fight and gave a great performance. But you have to give it to Lennox that he worked the cuts very well and the longer the fight would last, the more damaged would be Vitalis face. In my opinion it was Lennoxs best victory (most significiant) and Vitalis career defining fight, where he showed great skills and heart.
I would have thought Klitschkos fans would have been happy for the fight to be stopped. If that fight would have gone another round or two,Klitschko could have ended up losing sight in that eye. In all likelihood,it would have been a career ended for Klitschko. Lewis won the fight, fair and square. To say Klitschko would have won if it wasnt for the cut,is like saying Hatton would have beaten Pacquaio if it wasnt for the concussion! Lewis was landing bombs and it cut Vitalis face to bits. The stoppage was every bit as legitimate as a straight KO. Thats why its called a technical Knock out. Lewis retired at an age most fighters retire. Vitali had his chance against a past prime, inactive, heavy Lewis and he couldnt take it. End of discussion.
We keep going back to this fight because it is the last FOTY quality fight in the heavyweight division.
He ended up getting SIXTY stitches. How much does everyone think he'd have ended up gtting if the fight went another couple of rounds?
Lewis trained 2 months for that fight. Vitali trained less then 2 weeks for that fight. Vitali only lost one round. Lewis was rocked many times and about to fall. If the fight had gone one or two more rounds lewis would have been KO'd Lewis beat the worst and most out of shape Vitali that ever stepped into the ring.
I just shake my head when people are so sure that Lewis would have won that fight if it had continued. Let's get this straight. Fighter with the bigger punches-Vitaly Fighter with the better chin-Vitaly Fighter with the better conditioning-Vitaly Was going to lose if this fight was allowed to continue. SURE, whatever gets you through the night...
