I have always enjoyed top level sport for what it is.

Lennox did something no other HW champion has done, he took on his #1 contender on a weeks notice when Kirk Johnson pulled out. Lennox knew Kirk had not been training properly & neither had he. Lennox was barely 80% ready when he gave Vitali a facelift TKO-6. What was the point in a rematch?? There was no one else in contention. Wlad went AWOL lol.
I dont think for one minute Lennox will ever get in the ring again, He'd been tempted with big offers over the years but true to his word he stayed retired like a real champion

I agree. We should just be thankful they even fought at all. LL looked like he was done with boxing and happy to move on. It was a gutsy performance by both men and something we get to remember in boxing history forever. Great fight, great controversy to keep the discussion going. I'm content with that.

 

I'd have loved to have watched a rematch that winter, it would have answered some fascinating questions, namely what sort of shape was Lewis capable of getting into, if he really knuckled down, at that very late stage of his career, and whether it had really only been the cut(s) standing inbetween Vitali and a really big marquee win. I kind of despair at the fanboys on this thread who claim to definitely know the answer to both.

but, yeah, that chance came and went, and went, and went, it's now at least 15 years too late, pointless now, on a par with making a pilgrimage to Elvis's grave and shouting for 'jailhouse rock'.
