Watching that fight, Lewis apart from the 1st round were Tyson started fast was in control. Of course he had to be cautious early on when Tyson is very dangerous - were Tyson starts a fight on a full tank..we all know Tyson was a fast starter! But after say rounds 4-5 Lewis looks to me that he could have stepped on the gas and finished Tyson almost anytime he wanted. Only for his being a safefy first fighter did he not do that IMO. Even in one of the last few rounds Manny is going mad at Lennox telling him to step it up and get him out of there before "he catches you with some crazy ****!" as he said! Lewis's win that night I think could have been much more impressive as he looked so much in control and Tyson was in front of him just eating jabs, hooks and uppercuts. He could have jumped on Tyson and opened up around the 4th or 5th round and blasted him right out of there. How did you see it? Did Lewis really need to take it to the 8th round to get the job done?
At one point Lewis said he hurt his right hand to the point of it almost being useless and it took him a couple of rounds to climatise to the pain before putting his full power into it again. He said there wasn't any point in telling this to Manny when he was freaking out on him, so he just let him vent. Not sure if it's true or not, but that's Lewis' version of events.
I've not heard that before were did you hear that? Source? Watching the fight he looked like he was ok with his hands and never stopped throwing it all night long.
Lewis said during the Legendary Nights documentary that his right hand was hurting. I understand Manny's concern, but Lewis did the right thing. You don't want to get overconfident against a puncher like Iron Mike.
I hear what your saying, but remember Tyson was there and coming back with nothing. His heart was broken, and Manny said what he said from an intelligent boxing mind. His advice wasnt bad advice IMO. Anyway this is only to get peoples views.
That statement you made was said on "Legendary nights", Lewis chose to be cautious that night and rightly so, any version of Mike always had that one punch that could turn a fight around. We seen Lewis the same way against McCall in 97, his oppenent practically had his hands at his waist and he refused to try and finish him, Lewis lacked the killer instinct that made Tyson an icon.
I wont argue with you there, he was an underrated finisher, when he wanted to he can lay his oppenent out with the best of them, I know Golota, Briggs, Ruddick, and Morrison wouldnt call him a bad finisher.
I think lewis wanted to beat up tyson more with tyson bad behaver in the press conference and lewis wanted that pay back by beating the hell out of tyson in which he did. Don't forget lewis ko tyson way early then holyfield and dougles did and thats very impressive.
Once again, Lennox wanted to punish him and not end it on purpose. That fight was over 20 years in the making and Lennox had a point to make.
He was afraid of getting countered with something big, if he opened up with something big theres a chance of that happening, instead he picked his shots and won behind the jab, he did the right thing I thought.
