Just re-watched the fight again today and it's pretty clear, atleast to me, that Vitali is hittable but Lewis showed that you need to be able to take a few in order to get past that long jab and straight right which is a very potent weapon . Also Vitali cuts pretty easy, it's just most fighters who have fought him recently have not been able to land, or have been on the receiving end of that jab.

Now I'm not saying beating Vitali is easy, because it clearly is not, but it will take a tough chinned man, like Lewis was to beat him. Now David Haye will have a problem getting past that jab but if he is fast enough, and has enough movement, as Kevin Johnson showed, it is possible to make Vitali miss and counter. Remember that version of Lennox was not a Lennox in the best of shape, but he had enough guile, and ring craft to be able to do some damage, whilst receiving some hefty shots in return.

I think with Vitali's age and his injuries will have taken its toll on the big man. I think if there was ever a time to beat him, it's now. Of course, in theory it's quite possible, but in reality, is there any heavyweight out there, who has enough game to beat the man?

I just feel that whoever faces Vitali next, will need to be able to have enough speed, slick defensive skills and the ability to fight fire with fire.

Is there anyone out there who fits that description?

In a word - no. There doesn't seem to be. But for all the negative comments you can make about Haye, I firmly believe he's the 3rd best heavyweight in the world. He's got the best chance of knocking Vitali or Wlad off their perch.

Vitali might be the most intelligent heavyweight of all time...he is very resourceful and always finds a way to adapt and overcome his opponents...he adapted and overcame adversity when he was hurt by Corrie Sanders...this is how the haye fight might look...Haye and Sanders are about the same height and have roughly the same reach.

The only person i see who could potentially beat Vitali Klitschko right now is his brother...that's it.

i will believe that Haye is the 3rd best fighter in the division when he beats any of the top ten fighters in the division...i honestly don't think he can beat Povetkin, Chambers, Arreola, Thompson, Boystov, Chagaev, Solis, or JC Gomez.

There's only one way to find out...I just hope we get to see any of these potentially great match-ups.:good

Povetkin is pretty decent, solid operator, not spectacular, but hits hard enough, moves pretty good. I think Haye would trouble all of those mentioned fighters, simply because he possesses so much hand speed and big punching power. The shots that get you in trouble are the ones you don't see coming and thats why Haye has managed a lot of KOs, down to his speed. He's also pretty accurate and isn't wasteful, when he usually lets rip with big shots they do land.

Haye's speed will undoubtedly trouble Vitali, but I don't know if he can take Vitali's power. He keeps the punches straight, has a decent guard. But he can get erratic in his movements and get drawn in to a fight, and frustrated. Tough to call. I like the look of Solis, but he needs to get some more fights under his belt.

Problem is, guys have tried to stay on the outside and box him, that isn't going to work. Vitali is difficult to outbox. He simply takes a step back and counters, or leads with the left and will get you with the right. That's just where Vitali wants you to be in that hitting zone within reach.

It's the point I am making in that, to beat Vitali you have to get in his face, but will have to weather a storm. That means there needs to step forward someone strong willed, tough and quick that can take the power shots and dish out some punishment. I just wonder if Kevin Johnson had an offensive game, could have made the night even more uncomfortable for Vitali, but KJ was landing jabs, not many but he did land, and should have done better. So yeah, Vitali is hittable, just that he will no doubt catch his opponents with stiff jabs and straight rights, and there lies the problem.

After the distraction of the cut, he sure did...

half of his face was taken off from a glancing right hand...it almost seemed as if the laces took Vitali's skin around the eye completely off...it wasn't a very hard shot.

My point is, and I don't want to focus on this beaten issue much longer, the fight was very different before and after the most horrific and grotesque cut i have ever seen in boxing.

Lewis was most definitely in as good a shape as he could have been in at the age of 37.

hsi excellent condition is what saved him from being knocked out.

the reason why Lewis was breathing heavy early was because of the intense physical pressure Vitali put him under. Lewis was never pressured like that before by a bigger man.

Lewis definitely showed a facet of his all time greatness in this fight. As did Vitali.

This really was one of the most exciting hwt title fights in history, as long as it lasted. the ending was a killjoy though.

I'm a David Haye fan, I want him to beat either or both brothers and I respect your opinion but I personally am not convinced that David is the 3rd best heavyweight in the world. That being said, styles make fights and he has as much chance of beating one of the Klitschkos as anyone else who is currently around, which is a slim chance.

Good post...Lets hope that Floyd Mayweather has finally learned that there is no shame or discredit in losing to a great fighter...it's making the fights that matter...this is what really makes a fighter great.

Saying Lewis was out of shape is a false revision of history. Remember Vitali has stepped in as a replacement in the last few weeks. Vitali was not training for a scheduled fight when he was asked to step in, where as Lewis had been training all along to defend his title and was well prepared on fight night. Lewis looked drunk the whole fight after Vitali beat him around the ring. Lewis got very lucky with the cut on Vitali from the grazing punch.

My observation is that Lewis retired to avoid getting knocked out by Vitali in a rematch.
