Nobody forces you to watch their fights... But you can't deny, they truly rule the heavyweight division!
anybody else heard the story about lennox's mother looking into vitali's eyes and telling her son not to give him a rematch?
I don't agree! I think Lewis was tiring as the fight progressed and definitely was going to get beat....
I dont know when some of you last saw the fight, but I watched it yesterday and no, Vitali did not steal the show or become champ. Vitali has a good few rounds. It appeared as though Lennox underestimated Vitali early on, and later adjusted, started to get his timing down and he was landing shots. Cut or no cut, Lewis was starting to get success. With only half the number of rounds gone, I think Lewis would have found a way to win, or it would have been very close on the scorecards in the end, but in no way was Lennox getting a beating for those entire 6 rounds as some people are suggesting. It was a close fight, and I think Lennox would have come through it, albeit having fought maybe the fight of his life, as he was taken out of his comfort zone and had to fight at a pace he maybe had not operated at for a while. It was a great fight, with an older (and yes out of shape Lewis) With Vitali it's an interesting one, truth is we don't know how great a fighter he actually is. I mean who has he beaten that was any good since Lewis? Where are the fights that define his legacy? Kirk Johnson, Corrie Sanders, Danny Williams, Sam Peter, Juan Carlos Gomez, Chris Arreola, Kevin Johnson. I dunno, none of these guys could be considered world class. I mean it's not Vitali's fault but most of these guys are fat, out of shape heavy weights who don't exactly carry a massive punch either. Lewis had a decent dig, and caused a lot of damage, and on top of that, he was the best fighter of that era, who had beaten everyone and won every belt. It's Not Vitali's fault, but he's been served up a real crop of nobodies some of whom have no discipline and commitment to their chosen profession, merely showing up, giving it a lot of talk and picking up a pay day. Based on his resume, I don't think in no way can you consider Vitali a great champion. A good champion, a solid one, who never really got tested due to the very shallow talent pool in the heavyweight division.
vitali was there to make a statement to get the world to demand a fight with lewis. lewis on the other hand was getting ready to fight a mandatory who pulled out. there is a huge difference and a huge lesson learned. always train for the best. Lewis' promoter signaled Lewis' doctor to signal Lewis' referee to stop the fight to save Lewis from being knocked out in the very next round. Lewis' nose was very badly broken, Lewis was staggered. Vitali did not even try to use his defense, he just threw caution to the wind and kicked Lewis' arse. Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the title that night.
