It's a shame the public never warmed to Lennox. He was terrific. He made Briggs his boy, always in control even when he was a little hurt early.
This was actually a really entertaining fight. One of the things about Lewis is he's been involved in plenty of good fights, but he never had that one career defining fight that everyone remembers. I suppose the only thing that even comes close to something like that is Lewis/Klitschko. :yep
Thats true Lewis is remember for KO'ng an old Tyson. And getting KO'd by Rahman. All of his other quality wins seem to be forgotten.
I love Lennox's reaction the first time he knocks Briggs down. He just turns and strolls away, sort of dismissively, and lets the ref do the count. He didn't have the fire that really turns casual fans on, especially to heavies, but if you know your boxing, you can see the greatness in him very easily. He took on a very large man in Briggs and made him seem small.
Lewis was a Damn good fighter, who was under-rated , beat Holy when Holy was still dangerous, beat the sh!t out of Morrison who was hot at the time, and KO'S OVER Ruddock and Frank Bruno were impressive,..:smoke but people were alway's more interested in Tyson:-(
The thing I remember about the first round is that the announcers were slobbering over how Briggs had Lewis hurt, but if you watch the fight in slow mo, Lewis was just off balance and Brigg's punches weren't connecting flush. He didn't land a flush shot till near the end of the round, long after the announcers thought he was hurt. Maybe it was the second round... well the one in which Lewis stumbled.
I would say the problem with Lennox, at least here in the states, is that Lennox just didn't have that charisma most heavyweights fans like.
lewis was a true great, it was a disgrace how long it took him to get recognition in america - and then it was only be-grudging praise he got. he took out everybody in that era - ruddock, galotta, tua, mercer, morrison, holyfield, tyson, klitchsko, and many others. he could box but when he needed to take someone out, he hit like an absoloute slegehammer. it was a pity riddick bowe cowardly through the wbc belt in the garbage bin rather than face lewis but that was the fear in bowe, he remembered too clearly what lewis did to him in the olympics.
Truely a great fight. Briggs was so much better back then. He still had a leaky defense and suspect stamina, but at least went for the kill. Very entertaining fight and a great performance by Lewis. I think Briggs' chin is pretty good actually: since that fight he was never KO'd (that is nearly a 10 year stretch) and he took a lot of hard punches from Lewis before going down 4 times.
Very interesting Lewis display against a game and hungry Briggs. I felt a rather unusual willingness from Lewis part to come forward after getting pressured in the first stanza but he showed great composure to go along with his punch power set, but it cannot be disregarded that Shannon was halted when he went down for missing with a punch rather than collapsing onto himself. Over all, given the fact that Briggs was the linear hwt champ ( won in Nov.97 against Foreman) and Lewis soundly out-punched him and had him down several times, I would say that this win in March 98 and the previous one against Golota in Oct. 97 positioned the British Lion as a must for Heavyweight unification with Evander Holyfield.
lennox was sadly under rated¬ appreciated when he was active&look how much the heavyweight division misses him now,he woulda beat any heavyweight of the last 20years even prime tyson
The best moment for Lewis' career (I speak as a Lennox fan) was the look on Golotas face after Lennox had beaten him to the floor. It looked like utter terror.
Lewis v Briggs was a very entertaining fight. Lewis did get rocked, but it's the way he reacted that impressed me. Briggs was a very tough and dangerous man, and Lewis could have been forgiven for taking a cautious approach. Instead, he faced him head on and outgunned him. This is what heavyweight title fights should be like, too manty times there is debate over who was the better man. I loved the way Briggs laughed at Lewis, then got flattened.
