What a great performance, especially considering Golota was seen as one of the best fighters in the division. He was one of the "high risk - low reward" fights, he ruined Bowe's career. Hear the surprise of the commentator as he yells "And Golota is on the floor!!".

Interesting sidenote, the first right hand that stunned Golota and backed him into the corner seems to be very similar to the one that knocked Ruddock down in the first round of their fight.

A quick destruction that's on par with Tyson vs Spinks, Liston vs Patterson, Frazier vs Foster, Dempsey vs Fulton, etc (not talking about the value of the win of course).

A tremendous performance by Lewis. He always seemed at his best when fighting with a sense of urgency. The big guys seemed to bring out the best in him.

Yep good points. One of Lewis' very best performaces/wins, a quickfire destruction par excellence. Watch for the big overhand right followed by a left hook which stunned Golota and the following barrage which decked him in the corner was economically devestating, he worked a way in beind the jab and not one of the following shots missed. The look on Golotas face after the first knockdown was one of panic and disbelief, he sure as heck didn't know where the hell he was.

Devestating finish to close the show too. A few tasty uppercuts. :good

It is not unreasonable to rate this fight up with Dempsey Fulton, Louis Schmeling II, Liston Patterson and Tyson Spinks as one of the all time great blowouts.

Agreed. Tyson-Berbick, Lewis-Ruddock and Liston-Patterson (either fight) deserve a big mention too in that regard. :yep

Try watching this after Bowe-Golota I & II, it really backs up that old adage - speed kills.

I don't think Lewis '97 was hitting Golota all that harder than Bowe '96, but he was more efficient and quicker with his shots and it just overwhelmed Golota. He shortens up his right hand in particular much better.

Lewis shows almost everything he has in the fight, offencively. Great jab, good combination punching, he puts them together really well...I think he shows here that his handspeed is generally underated and his power really isn't.

People often want to talk about how Lewis came to his best later in his career than is normal. I would invite people to compare the finish here with the one against Bruno to underwrite this point. Against Bruno Lewis does finish decisively but he is crewd, clumsy, off balance and takes an age to measure his punches which don't land with overwhelming accuracy.

Here, he continues to be brutal but is also controlled, accurate and never really off balance. Look at his face when he move in on Golota after the first (really, really long) count. Cool, cool, cool. Has a quick look and then back to work.

I also really love in the opening moments when Lewis lands a double jab and Golota ducks down. Lewis keeps a glove on him the whole time presumeably feeling for a pivot or any other movement. He also turns Golota absolutley beautifully when Gollota clinches, not really contesting the clinch against this big man but controlling his movement around the ring nevertheless.

Lewis is an underated general, too I think.

    Great, great, great performance.

I do think so actually. Bowe never really showed by one punch power, Lewis did. It seems that Riddick was more the type to throw a lot of punches, heavyhanded ones, but not the one-punch concussive type. The same difference between Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko's power.

In general, I'll concede that point.
About 3 years or back here, I can't remember who on earth it was but it was someone that was an actual trainer like bigcat or similar, and he absolutely loved Lewis's little bounce off the two ropes before turning Golota about. Really waxed lyrical about that.

Every Elite that Golota fought blew him out.

Its only that one guy who got an asskicking twice only to be saved by an act of God
