Truly the last great Heavyweight fight. :smoke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_YNOOUjeHw [yt]d_YNOOUjeHw[/yt]
Nice compilation. Lewis clearly demonstrated the way to beat the Klitschkos. Get inside, stay there and be relentless.
When people suggest he ducked the rematch, I look at it this way; Imagine if Vitali faced the likes of; Tyrell Biggs, Donovan Ruddock, Tony Tucker , Frank Bruno, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, Oliver McCall x2, Prime Shannon Briggs, Evander Holyfield x2, David Tua, Hasim Rahman x2, Old Mike Tyson and then faced a 31 year old Lennox Lewis in his prime who destroyed Andrew Golota. Then you realize how great it was what Lewis did. Thanks for the comments mate.
It was a sloppy brawl but very entertaining none the less. I didn't remember Lewis landing so much heavy artillary (but who could forget that ****ing uppercut that he landed and Vitali took) but clearly he did. Vitali's chin must rank amongst the very best to grace the heavyweight division going by that. I haven't seen a heavyweight title fight anywhere near as good since that nor any heavyweight fights full stop.
Lewis never offered te re-match he said, even though he told the press multiple times, and the money was up . A re-match would have been a special night for boxing. We never saw it. The only explanation is Lewis knew deep down he would not be as lucky in the re-match. It is also a known fact that Lewis was talking about other fights after he fought Vitali, so he was never retired. It was only when the WBC ordered the re-match and said do it or we will strip you that Lewis quickly retired.
Lewis actualy went one better than giving Vitally Klitschko a rematch. He retired, effectivley handing him the title on a plate if he chose to take it. That should have made things easier for him, not harder.
Two bafoons falling over each other and doing the tango around the ring. The highlight reel makes it look better than it was.
There is no onus on Lewis to continue a career as a profesional boxer, or stay around untill somebody has the honour of beating him. If he wants to retire and is prepared to vacate the title, then that is fine. Shame more ATGs didn't do the same.
Probably was the last great heavyweight fight. This is what separates the greats from the goods and Klitschko was exposed as such. He coudlnt fight and when boxing went out the window so did Vitali. Lewis wasnt the best of them but he did have that dimension to his game where he could take a fighter into a fire fight if he was getting outboxed.
