There is an old adage that any heavyweight can knockout any heavyweight. The issue however is that when pairing fighters up in fantasy matchups you have to base things according to a certain level of probability. Could Marciano land a punch that may leave Lewis on ***** street? Yes. Does the likleyhood of such a scenario outweigh the probability of Lewis doing the reverse? Not really.
Lewis fought plenty of fighters who hit much harder than RM, when did we see Rocky look as devestating as Tyson, Tua. Not to mention McCall/Rahman were likely to be twice as strong as Marciano. Many Lennox opponents were much heavier handed than Rocky and he beat them all. BTW Lennox has an iron chin video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4SQmxIP5Bk
Say what you want. All we know is rocky marciano had one punch knockout power in his right hand against anyone regardless of size. There is evidence based on the mccall and rahman fights that if marciano lands a clean right on lennox, that lennox will be down for the count. Ive seen that video before and its nice, speaks volumes of lennox chin. However one cannot elude the fact lennox was twice starched out while champion to two mediocre heavyweights, he did not show good recuperative powers in those fights. If he took them lightly or the altitude affected him or he was out of shape or whatever, thats his own fault. no exuse. By these caliber fighters able to score a one punch knockout on him near his prime years, that means any journeyman heavyweight with a right hand punch pretty much has a chance against him... If were talking about the fragile old washed up mike tyson of 2002, and not the menacing lethal iron mike of the 80s(who would have starched lewis in under 5) then you don't have much of a case. David Tua's power came from his left hook, Lennox never had trouble with left hookers. I also happen to think marcianos one punch knockouts of walcott, layne, are just as devastating as any knockouts tua and tyson ever unleashed. I refuse to offer my opinion on this outcome, unless rocky gets the same modern nutrition, benefits, weight training programs, and supplements that michael spinx and evander holyfield got there hands on.
Holyfield and Spinks were 6′ 2½ and 6' 3", Rocky was only 5′ 10″. Also Rocky had the shortest reach of all the Heavyweight Champions 67" or 68" depending on the source. Holmes had a reach of 81" and Spinks 76". I don't care what modern nutrition, benefits, weight training programs, and supplements you do, you can't stretch your arms any longer and you can't get any taller. With that saying, every generation gets an inch or so bigger, so Rocky would most likely be 5' 11" and weighed close to 200 pounds if he fought in Lewis's time.
Marciano is 5'11, not 5'10. but thats besides the point Tua was 5'9, tyson was 5'10. these guys were able to develop into solid 220lbers, why not rocky? Rocky was naturally well over 200lb, thats what his brother told me personally, and that rocky had extreme difficulty by 1954 keeping his weight under 190lb. I believe rocky could have came in at 205-210lb today. david tua had what a 69" reach? tyson only 71" reach. rocky was big boned like these guys.
Gaining weight would not benefit Rocky, it was his conditioning that won him the really tough matches. Most sources say Rocky was 5'10-1/4", which is the 2nd shortest heavyweight champion ever, only behind Tommy Burns, BUT that really isn't the issue. Yes, I agree that Rocky was big boned BUT not as much as Tua or Tyson. They had trouble with guys like Lewis, Byrd, Holyfield, Douglas because of their lack of height and in my opinion, Tyson & Tua were much stronger then Rocky was. Tua weighed 245 for the Lewis bout.
1. Regardless of size is debatable because he didn't stop or even face many top fighters weighing over 200lbs, I see Marciano as more of an accumulation puncher anyway 2. Assuming 185lb Marciano hits as hard as a 240lb powerpuncher 3. Yes Lennox wasn't focused but were assuming a Lennox at his best. Now you've boxed you should know if you lose focus, don't tuck your chin in and take a flush shot you can be taken out 4. I'd stick by rating Marciano as more of an accumulation puncher type. 5. Your right, Marciano is at a huge advantage without modern nutrition and training. He'd still be up against it with the height/speed/reach disadvantages
"Lewis-Marciano" is NOT even a good match being made in dreamland.............. LEWIS BY WICKED KO!!! Gimmie something like "Dempsey-Marciano" or "Max Baer-Marciano." That stuff is of interest to me..... Christ, even "Johansson-Marciano" is interesting... MR.BILL
