It's a close fight ... I have it usually as a draw or as Mercer winning but barely .... It was certainly not a decisive victory for either man ... And there honestly should have been a rematch ... But Lewis never gives others a rematch in close fights but seems to receive them plenty .... This lowers his status on the ATG list IMO. Mercer and Vitali definitely deserved rematches ... Funny how Lewis literally ducked the Vitali rematch into retirement
I agree. I won’t Bash Lewis, but I do believe Mercer and Vitali both great entertaining fights deserved rematches. Far more so than the version of McCall that received one which was virtually meaningless in his condition.
People actually rate the McCall rematch as an actual "victory" for Lewis where he "avenged" his only loss at the time. The truth is that he never truly beat McCall ... The second bout should've been ruled a no contest and a subsequent third fight should have been in the talks ... I understand if it would have not happened because of McCalls bizzare behavior but a third fight should have been discussed at the least ... Lewis is an ATG and I have him easily in the top 10 heavyweights of all time and he's like top 5 H2H ... But I think durable guys with decent right hands could always be a big threat for Lewis ... There should've been a third McCall fight and rematches with Mercer and Vitali ... At least one out of those three should've happened .... We don't live in an ideal world so I understand if all 3 don't happen but he should've at least rematched Vitali after saying he would .... Id say that would be the most deserving rematch
Mercer made his fights with Holyfield and Lewis close, but he got edged both times. Legitimate decisions. The decision that was debatable was the Witherspoon fight, in which a good argument could be made that Spoon won (or a draw), and yet the judges had it wide for Mercer.
I have to rewatch the Witherspoon Mercer fight haven’t seen it in years. I agree Mercer lost the Holyfield clear - in a good fight. The Lewis fight was razor close, I have never felt that I can give Mercer 6 rounds in that fight - although many ppl do. I usually end up with 5-5 with Lewis losing more rounds in first half of fight and winning more in second half. 6-4 Lewis I can live with or 5-5 are fair cards imo. Was a fun fight.
Mercer made a great start against Lewis and met him halfway in setting the tone and shaping the fight, keeping it competitive, throughout. But, while Mercer was competitive, Lewis carried the edge - and that was enough to separate them on the night. Lewis 96-94
I had it 6-4 for Lewis. Lewis never gave re-mathes in ANY of his tough fights, you have to knock him out to get one. One Things Lewis can complain about at is the ring for this fight was only 16 x 16, helping Mercer. That wasn't in the contract.
