Lewis vs Tyson: A super fight that lived up to the hype?

Big Lewis fan, seen the fight, and it's not even close to being a classic. I guess this only applies to two famous fighters (hence the name super fights) because the Lewis -Klitschko fight was a far more interesting, albeit, less technical, fight.

 

One sided fight although prior to the opening bell the anticipation of the opening bell was incredible. Then it rang and ....blah.

 

The buildup was 10 times better than the fight. Definitely did not live up to the hype. Boxing news is a British mag isn't it? Probably picked that fight as Lewis is seen by them as British.

 

Lewis v Tyson was a circus from start to finish.
The only reason Tyson was given any chance was because 1. Lewis had been KO'd by Rahman, and 2. the man on the street could still be convinced Tyson was some unbeatable creature.

It was a circus event. The hype was more about how crazy and unpredictable Tyson was. Las Vegas didn't even want the fight ! They took it to Memphis because they had to.

The fight was sad, and a bit dull.
There was no glory to be had from that fight. Tyson took his beating honourably but he really didn't want to be in there, he was a sad caricature.

 

About as real a fight as mayweather v mcgregor. All hype but anyone with a brain knew the fight was a pointless mismatch. How Lewis still claims it as a valid victory is beyond me.

If the first fight didnt mess up the buzz, Holyfield vs Lewis 2 was an excellent fight. If that was what we got the first time with the draw verdict or MD win for either guy, would have been a super fight classic

 

It this Boxing News as in British Boxing News?

If so, "living up to the hype" means the transplanted Englisher won.

 

I had decided to attend this fight. Figured I would spend a few thousand to get a half way decent seat, fly down myself and spend a few days and then fly back to Newark. THEN I heard the tickets were on sale. But I could find them nowhere. Box office, ticketron etc. nothing. Then something pointed me to the website for the fight bold headline. "THIS FIGHT IS FOR HIGH ROLLERS ONLY". I forget the seat prices but they were outrageous. Needless to say I decided to forgo being ripped off and instead watched the fight in the comfort of my family room.

 

Nah, not really. I watched that fight live and the buildup was intense, as was the first round. After that it became increasingly one sided and you knew there was only going to be one winner. I wasn't even particularly shocked when Tyson went down. He was eating some absolute bombs.

The undercard had Gatti Ward though, so it was far from wasted money.

 

Lewis Tyson was hype and did not live up to it. Tyson was not the same guy he was in his prime years before.

 

16 years since he won the title against Berbick in 1986, did people really believe the hype that Tyson was the same dangerous fighter that he was back then? I would be surprised if Tyson himself truly believed that he could have won.

 

Tyson knew he had no chance, he didn't pull those pre fight antics for nothing. he tried the mad man act, which probably did unnerve Lewis a bit because he may have wondered if he would finish the fight with his nut sack in tact. Tyson didn't care if the fight happened or not, he probably hoped it would get cancelled after that brawl and homophobic rant. shocking that the event went ahead really, Tyson clearly wasn't right. the difference in mentality was clear, could you see 80s Tyson acting like that, he was mentally done by 2002.
