Anyway, you seem to doubt that Lewis did not have the desire to come in tip top shape for the rematch. I agree with you on that, actually that is why I believe he retired. Lewis knew he had to be in top shape to beat Vitali in the rematch.

On your point that a cut like that is rare, keep in mind that there were muliple cuts. They did not come from one single punch. Vitali got hit by overhand rights of Lewis because he keeps his left hand way too low.That is just a flaw, Lewis exploited in their match.

fortunately all the hw champs in his history retiring by 38 bar foreman is stone cold fact, lewis had almost 100% of hw champs feeling he should retire at 38.

lets face it, if lewis hadnt fought vitali you'd treat lewis just the same as all the other hw champs, giving him a pass for retiring from the title defences at 38 as did all the others by that age.

Lennox Lewis knew better, which is why he retired. He tried to make fights with easier men ( Roy Jones, Kirk Johnson ) And he ran his mouth. But when the WBC ordered the rematch, he quickly retired. Not even a 16-18 He had a 16-18 million-dollar purse could change his mind. This indicates to me he knew he would likely lose the rematch.

Vitali, who took the fight on less than 2 weeks notice ( He was preparing for a 10 round match vs. a no name ) was up 4-2 on all three score cards, and Lewis was very tired after the 6th. this means Lewis would need to win 4 of the next 6 rounds on at least two cards to get a draw.

The cut, which could have been caused by an illegal backhand by Lewis' glove over Vitali's eye region meant everything in this fight.

A few questions.

Who has the advantage? A man training for a ten round match vs. a nobody or the Champion preparing for a 12 round match vs a much better opponent? This will tell me everything, but please do not go around the question and answer it directly.

Vitali was also training to fight a much shorter opponent by the way.

The main cut was over the eye. Did you not see you tube back hand over the eye region just before the cut appeared? I'm asking again because I have posted the video more than once.

Lewis was marked up too, cut in a different areas and perhaps more swollen around the eyes. There is a difference
between being cut and being swollen.

Vitali had a contract drawn up to challenge Lewis 6 weeks prior to fighting Larry Donald which was 7 months before he actually challenged Lewis! For the Donald fight he scaled just 1.25lbs less than for the Lewis fight,in his next fight after Lewis ,Vitali weighed 2 lbs more than he had for Lewis.He was focused and in shape for Lewis and the number one contender, he was also 32 to Lewis' 37!He had a 5 years advantage!
