People talk about Jimmy's lack of offense or initiative but Lennox could be just as guilty sometimes. Despite having good power, combinations, and a size advantage Lennox could be lazy or never get out of 1st gear. He was content to go the distance as long as he wasn't in danger of getting blasted hard or his stamina weak. In other words, this would be an incredibly boring fight. Think Greg Page vs Tony Tubbs or Mayweather vs Berto. Neither guy would really be planting their feet and swinging for the fences, trading, in fighting, or going for the KO. Lennox would probe and test the waters in the first few rounds to see how Young responds and give up chasing him once he sees how elusive he is and the fact he can take a punch even if he gets hit. Unfortunately for Lennox, Young is even better at being lazy and having a boxing chess match. Lennox, with his calm aloof expressions, would think he's cruising to a unanimous decision with his pawing jab, occasional right hand, moving to the left and grabbing if Young got too close. By round 7 he will have noticed that he's breathing out his mouth from the innocuous body shots and herky jerky movements of Young to make Lennox miss by mere centimeters or rolling with a punch to minimize the damage. Soon Lennox would become the aggressor and start getting countered having spent most of the fight allowing himself to be studied and for Young to pick up on his timing and habits. Round 10 we would finally see sone action as Lennox is now fearful of gassing out or potentially being down on the cards. Both fighters let their hands go but only in spurts because Young fears his power and Lennox fears being countered. Lennox does manage to rock Young with an overhand hand right and cause some swelling. He corners him and lets his hands go for a bit and Young takes a knee to avoid more punishment before the Round ends. Round 12 would just be both guys playing a game of chicken and trying to get the other guy to lead. Lennox wins a close but fairly uneventful decision with his brief moments of aggression, jabbing, and knockdown giving him a slight nod.
Well, fights were 15 rds when jimmy was in his prime. What happened to the rest of the fight. You know, the part when Lennex is too tired to be in there?
Jimmy was underrated in his day but overrated in hindsight. While I fully respect his abilities, he should NOT be favored over Lennox Lewis. Muhammad Ali was fading when the two squared off. George Foreman was throwing up in the locker room after the fight and claiming to see visions of Jesus which leads me to believe it wasn’t exactly his best night. Lennox in his prime had the all around package of size, power, athleticism, and boxing ability to leave Young with nothing to do but retreat. My pick is Lewis by decision but a stoppage isn’t out of the question either.
