I think that Holyfield would have unified the titles, and it would have been a big boost for his historical standing, even if he didn’t hold them for long. It would have closed the debate on who the best heavyweight of the 90s was and some of the more optimistic all time rankings being offered up at the time, might have endured.

From here the dialogue gets interesting, because Holyfield probably can’t hold the title very long, or walk away from it. He probably loses it to somebody, who has the potential to lose it fairly quickly, and to a number of people. This likely results in a shuffling of the pack in the division, like we saw between Tunney and Louis. We could see a fairly dynamic title picture for a few years.

We can rule out R. Bowe as ever becoming a dominant force. The Golata fights of 1996-97 ruined him and he didn't seem made for longevity anyway. Michael moorer, George foreman, Larry Holmes and for the most part mike Tyson were all finished by 1997 as well.. Evander Holyfield likely reigns for a few years until someone like Byrd, Ruiz or one of the klitsckos's dethrones him.. From there you'd have a pretty weak and scattered division for several years given that Wladimir didn't fully materialize until about the mid 2000's and vitali's time was short lived.
