he said this when judah hit Mayweather back to the head, and when Maidana hit Cayo, when Cayo was hanging between the ropes. Floyd and Cayo really had no chances protect themselves. i dont know why he keeps saying that, it was all Maidana and Judah's fault.
Well it is true. It doesn't make what they did not illegal, but for example, Kermit Cintron almost intentionally bends over so that you can ONLY hit the back of his head in many fights, then complains about being fouled.
he says it because those guys were probably turning their back or ducking down below the beltline, they need to protect to themselves at all times, not turn their back on an opponent and then complain to the ref when they get hit in the back of the head.
Some people take the "protect yourself at all times' mantra too far. Remember in Million Dollar Baby where Hillary Swank's character was walking back to here corner when the round was over and Lucia Riker's character cheapshotted her from behind and then Swank's character fell onto the stool and became a paralyzed from the neck down? I wonder if Lewis would've admonished her for not protecting herself at all times.
It's true. Mike Acey should've protected himself when he was on the floor and Lennox grabbed his neck and hit him three times.
Lennox describes the obvious like no one else, if he was commentating for the Klitschko-Chambers fight you know while Chambers is lying motionless on the ropes Lewis would exclaim, "he was definitely hurt by that punch".
I like how during the end of Maskaev-Rahman 2, with Rahman dead-tired, hurt, and in the corner taking shots, Lewis goes "I'm telling you, he's about to get knocked out!!", as if it isn't obvious to everyone watching the fight. Or them talking about eye injuries and Lewis says some **** like "you need both eyes in there". "He should keep his hands up, or else he might get hit". Thanks for the expert insight, Lennox.
I love watching when Lennox is commentating, you know you're gonna hear some gems. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2R3K8r3Fmg[/ame]
"protect yourself at all times" is just a rule of thumb... look at what happened to million dollar baby... :deal
You can't really take it past "all times". Just because a person speaks a truth doesn't mean they blame the person for it. It is like the "What were you doing over there?" question everyone asks when some BS pops off. You have every right to expect to be "safe" from shady stuff, but we all know it happens.
I liked lewis when he was fighting but he is a **** commentator. If not for being an ex HW champ he wouldnt get a sniff at commentating on HBO
Hellooooooooo. He's stepped off of the one-word "DEFinitely" sentence, so he's getting better. I'm (slowly) warming up to him. It's kind of a Bizarro World at the rare times when he's the only sane man on the ringside team. I hate, hate, HATE when he does that! Even with Angulo, he looked over at the ref every time he got hit.
