The recent Toney threads prompted me to watch a few of his fights on YouTube recently (going up to his Cruiser days). How do you think he'd get on at LHW against prime Kovalev, Beterbiev or Stevenson?
In his prime oddly enough I might pick Kovalev to out point him. I think Toney takes out Stevenson, and Toney and Beterbiev is pretty close.
He beats them all. Looking at the Kovalev-Pascal fight, this would not end well for Kovalev who would not be able to handle Toney's sophisticated style. Berbetiev is tailor made for Toney.A straight up European fighter, if Toney shows up, he gives Berbetiev a beating. Stevenson might actually be the most difficult of the 3, but my guess is Toney would figure him out
Thanks for the replies. You know how people go by "styles make fights"...? I don't know why, but after watching Toney so much recently, I can't quite place him. I struggle to match him up with other boxers he hasn't shared a ring with in reality. Not sure if I like or dislike him or just find him damn frustrating.
Kov deals with Toney. His jab, power, killer instinct and balance were phenomenal. Could lead with the back hand, too. Ad he'd be too busy for him.
Kovalev up to and through the first Ward fight beats the stationary James whose feet are two slow to make up the space for Kovalev’s reach and outside game toney beats the rest
It's funny how Toney is a master of his sophisticated craft nowadays, but, gosh, in his prime time, he was accused of being one-dimensional even.
Listen, I'm a full member. I don't know if that really matters or not to anyone here, but I'm not some halfarsed semi-member, typing around for no reason, to no acclaim.
Toney gives Berbetiev a beating? Other way around, haven't you seen Berbetiev fight? There is not way a person who takes breaks or tries to trade lasts vs AB. Toney would have to be in his bike the entire match.
Toney was never the same fighter after the Roy Jones undressing. At lhw he regularly turned up badly conditioned and unmotivated. Its the reason he lost to Griffin twice and lost a close decision to Thadzi. I thought he should of got the nod, but either way he struggled with a club fighter. I can't see lhw Toney doing well against any of those guys.
You have a lot of confidence in a guy with only 15 fights against a well schooled top 100 ATG who has never been stopped or taken a real beating. Shouldn't you wait things out first?
Toney failed at 175. That's what we have to go by. I'll take Kovalev to outpoint him and Stevenson to outwork him. Beterbiev would probably be a close war and great fight. These are real guys.
I can't take it seriously when people talk about how talented a LHW Toney could have been. Because he just wasn't. He should be able to beat these guys, but the reality is, in his actual career as a LHW, he did very little. He only ever faced 1 ranked opponent and that was Montell Griffin. Thats it, the sum of Toney as a LHW. 2 fights he lost with Griffin. For whatever reason 175 just wasn't his weight class.
My conclusion is that you just do not know **** about boxing,Toney on his bike LOL.This guy stood right in front of Rahman and Peter.Toney would punish Berbetiev
