Round 5

Immediately Contreras is pushed to the ropes. Ornelas goes for broke, swinging hard. Contreras manages to spin him around and land a few bombs of his own! Ornelas chases with low-aimed uppercutting flurries. Contreras lines up his own straighter shots up high while taking very few backward steps now. SAVAGE leaping hook combo to the body by Ornelas.

Pause. What's going on? Ornelas is having tape fixed on his glove. Meanwhile, they figure they may as well swap out Contreras' mouthpiece in the other corner. The referee surveys the crowd, scanning for hotties.

I can't remember ever seeing such a multifunctional break in the action.

Time in. Ornelas picks up his aggression right where he left off. Nasty combos to the face, favoring that powerful left hook. Contreras walks the perimeter, getting ripped across the face even as he pulls back above the waist but getting a shot of his own in here and there.

Round 6

Contreras manages to tie Ornelas up and spins in place with him while getting thumped on the sides. Ornelas jabs to get Contreras moving and releases a triple uppercut to the face, timing Contreras' lateral movement perfectly. Ornelas is landing short punches on the inside and pushing off. Contreras is trying to grab him behind the neck or avoid him altogether, holding his arms out in front of him and leaving his legs in a perennial moonwalk imitation. HUGE OVERHAND RIGHT BY ORNELAS!!!!! THAT WAS A MAXIMUM-STRENGTH NUKE! Contreras is an absolute stud for taking that. He grins and nods to acknowledge what a good shot it was. Ornelas keeps chopping away at him.

Round 7

Clinch. Contreras stalls, pushing Ornelas' arms down and squeezing them against him. Ornelas suddenly opens up with his longest and most spirited combo of the evening, landing about 50% of a long volley of power punches. Contreras clinches again. Short uppercut inside by Ornelas, knocks Contreras' head clean back. Contreras gets away and seeks shelter along the ropes. Ornelas comes after him and pounds away, landing a VERY loud left hook upstairs while jumping into a cornered Contreras. Ornelas takes a short breather, and Contreras starts to play with fire by stepping in to flurry the body and then duck off to the side to reset. Contreras backs off all the way to the opposite corner and Ornelas lands a brutal double hook to the side when he reaches him.

They're calling for the "upper, upper!" in one of the corners...pleading desperately for it.

 

Round 8

Hellacious combo landed to the face by Ornelas as they trade once Contreras is walked into the ropes. Big left hook by Ornelas moments later and Contreras grinds his teeth and pounds his fists together, shaking his head in defiance. Contreras sits briefly against the ropes before smartening up and moving on, using a lot of quick footwork to stay outside and not let Ornelas square up to him. Contreras hops on his toes and tries to summon up his remaining vestiges of confidence. Ornelas tries to lead with a hook and put a right behind it, but Contreras is able to counter him with much straighter and shorter shots through those wide ones. Contreras spins his fists around each other, very cocky. Watch-the-birdie jab goes wide and gets Ornelas to open up, but Contreras leans off to one side and lands a hard right hand to the bottom of the chin. Nice fake-out.

Contreras' rally was so impressive, I almost want to give him a sympathy round for his work in the last minute and a half.

 

Round 9

Contreras jabs from outside, keeping to his left. Ornelas targets the body from outside now instead of waiting to get up close. Low rights land. Now Contreras is walked to the ropes once more and Ornelas lands a couple more BIG brain-bruisers. Contreras is still shaking his head after each one. HUGE overhand right by Contreras, landed very nicely! Flurry to the body by Contreras, punctuated by a straight right to the face. Ornelas leans against him and slaps up at his face. Contreras easily navigates out of the pocket and is able to parry all of Ornelas' lunging attacks from the outside. Contreras lands a combo to the face!

 

Round 10

Contreras waves his hands on the outside, inviting Ornelas in. Reaching body shots by Ornelas. Contreras spins his right arm around like a lasso and lets it fly. They're trading shots to the face for long periods, and collapsing together to rest. Nice uppercuts inside by Contreras. Ornelas is slapping around with wide shots and hitting Contreras on the back and sides of the head. Contreras spreads out his wingspan to the crowd while backing out of an exchange, as though to say "Check it out, huh? I made it!" He then lands a good combo on Ornelas just before the bell.

Unanimous decision for Enrique Ornelas.

Contreras got one sympathy round from me. There were a couple where he came so close to maybe stealing it (but no cigar; just too much abuse taken). Ornelas won it going away.
