Excellent footage, the guy who made it understands boxing! When Schmeling is being interviewed ,if you read his lips he says,"yes I see something, but I won't tell."
I even liked the music ,what a change from the usual rap that accompanies most boxing clips.

Id also recommend Schmeling's autobiography that was translated into English. What a great book. I cant praise it enough. The guy was so interesting and so intelligent.

You know that I rate Louis as highly as anybody, but there was nothing lucky about it.

This is one of the best examples of somebody beating a more talented fighter, by using a brilliant fight plan, in the history of the sport.

That perfectly suited his style and with the right tool to get the job done. Kinda like the sort of brainwork Futch would do. It was good right hand though.

I think Max would beat Spinks because he was a very good puncher with the right hand. I remember Holmes wobbling Spinks with a glancing right in the second fight, and several other times too.

I think Max would catch him clean and KO him.

    Fair enough.

    I misunderstood you.

I don't necessarily agree, though, that an old Holmes was better than a young Schmeling.

Seriously, one factor which makes a Spinks-Schmeling comparison difficult is that Spinks using modern training methods (and possibly supplements) was able to build himself up to well over 200 lbs. Such methods were not available in Schmeling's era. It seems to me it distorts the size argument. Schmeling fought as a heavyweight from 23 on. I don't think he ever made light-heavyweight after 23. Spinks fought at light-heavy until close to thirty. Had Spinks been fighting in Schmeling's era and been born the same year, he might well have had to give up weight if he was to come into the fight in top shape anytime he fought Schmeling.

That said, he was taller and possibly had a longer reach.

Ezzard Charles, Gene Tunney, Archie Moore, and Tommy Loughran. They have a tough time doing it though. Schmeling was tough.

I do think Tunney would be one of the top guys for this

But I dont think Schmelling would be too starved of a target, Tunney wasnt solely an outboxer, he had more movement against Dempsey because of his come forward style and knew it would be the best tactic to beat him, same with Heeney, against others on film he was much more aggressive (important to note Gibbons and Carpentier were smaller/lesser punchers than Jack which I could also see as another reason he was more comfortable being aggressive vs them). Even with moving more against Dempsey he still mixed it up and was aggressive at times, I could see Schmelling having/creating opportunities to land.

Max and Tunney were very smart in and out the ring and id imagine theyd both come in with a great plan to fight the other, but I dont know if Tunneys would include the amount of movement used vs Dempsey since Schmelling was a counterpuncher and not an aggressive mauler like Dempsey. I dont see Tunney having as much success as he did vs Jack with a more movement based fight plan vs Schmelling, but I do think as a fighter he would have some success, Im undecided if I think its enough for me to favor him over Max though. While Tunney did have good movement its important to note who and what style he had success using movement against and that he didnt always fight that way.

Probably Harold Johnson. I'd like his chances vs Schmeling.
