In Mcvey's recent thread, he asked about the most durable fighters at MW, LHW and HW. It's easy to come up with a few names for heavyweight as well as middleweight, but at lightheavyweight, not much so. It seems that the ultra durable guys are a bit absent at lightheavyweight. Tunney is the first that comes to mind, although his competition at LHW was not that spectacular, but only down against Dempsey is impressive nontheless. Guys like Charles, Spinks and Moore have excellent durability, but it wasn't the Chuvalo/Hagler type of durability. Greb is another worth mentioning, although he was more of a natural (super)middleweight. Perhaps the picture is a bit skewed because most of them stepped up to heavyweight? There's a huge difference between taking a heavyweight and a LHW punch. For instance, if Spinks and Tunney never stepped up to heavyweight, they may have had reputations a bit less, but similar to Hagler or Hopkins (Bernard was down twice against a mediocre middleweight in Mercado, but you get the point).
Eh, there were multiple reasonings behind the Mercado fight. I think Hagler would be a great pick here, honestly.
My pick at LH was Maxim and he did it against big guy s too. Moore x3 Charlesx5 Walcottx3 Tandberg Valentinox2 Satterfield Murphy Nardico the only man to floor Lamotta. Patterson Machen x2 And he fought Curtess Sheppard "the hatchet Man"3x only losing once when he was caught cold. Has any LH had his chin tested more?
Langford, Kid Norfolk and Archie Moore all seemed to have astonishing punch resistnace at the weight.
Moore was so-so. I think his heart and ability to recover were several times better than his chin. Durelle wasn't a incredible puncher but he dropped Moore like he'd been shot with one punch. Ezzard had him out cold, as well.
I agree on this assessment of Moore's toughness , heart and willingness to keep fightind were unquestionable, but he doesnt fit into this 'super-durable' category being discussed here, there is evidence of that
Marciano seemed to maul Archie out of there while Durelle caught him extremely flush... So who knows.
I agree Moore could be kod ,his heart was top notch ,maybe not his chin. I like Tony Zale's quote about glass jaws ,he said "there arent as many glass jaws as glass hearts"
A great example of a cast iron chin would be Joey Maxim, who, but for his ko loss to Curtis Shepard, later avenged that loss, and went for the rest of his career, against stellar competition, even against heavyweights...fought all the best, and was never knocked out again.
That's a great post, and you will have noticed me come out with Tunney. Totally agree with the highlighted.
Nowadays I would say Glenn Johnson has the best chin out of any light heavyweight, all time Joey Maxim.
Moore had a lot to say about Marciano I think Marciano once said Moore might amount to something in time... The two didn't like each other.
