For me, it was Foreman vs Frazier 1. I saw it on closed circuit at the Felt Forum. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! The man who seemed indestructible was utterly manhandled and slaughtered!
Thought of another one: Mike Rossman defeating Victor Galindez for the WBA light heavyweight belt in 1978. Rossman, who was what I'd call a world-class club fighter (could compete with the best more on grit and determination but no special abilities or skill set), employed an interesting (and effective) strategy of concentrating on the scar tissue around Galindez's eyes, busting him up and winning by stoppage in 13. This was on the undercard of the Ali-Spinks rematch in New Orleans.
Sellers had ridiculous power. Hardest punching cruiserweight I think I've ever seen. To put things in perspective, a few years later Haye unleashed the kitchen sink on Thompson only for Thompson to come back and stop him. A younger, fresher Thompson was being dropped with every clean shot Sellers landed on him, and the majority didn't even look that hard. Only Kudryashov appears to have comparable power today.
Definitely the "forgotten bout",...Duane Thomas TKO John The Beast Mugabi. a so-so, humdrum kind of bout for 2 rounds, then suddenly in the 3rd ,a shot by Thomas destroys The Beast's eye socket,...and Mugabi turned his back to Duane, who fired away from all angles... This bout shocked me with the suddeness of the ending,...and the way it ended.
Chiquita Gonzalez finesseing his way to a 12 round decision over previous KO winner Michael Carbajal. It prompted one magazine to write an article titled, 'Could Rocky Marciano fight like Willie Pep?'
Lockridge - Laporte. Lockridge never knocked out in his career prior to nor after this, and oh the suddeness and decisiveness. It is almost exactly the same shot as Rosario hit Viruet with! I'm not sure Laporte ever fulfilled his potential. He seemed to lack something, that X factor. Sadly this fight is almost forgotten nowadays. This content is protected
