On 'Lightning Ray' Lampkin and Arturo 'Tury the Fury' Pineda,,,,,,,,, After their December '1973 War', 9-Months later, Arturo 'Tury the Fury' Pineda gets a shot at the WBC Lightweight Title versus new WBC Lightweight Champion 'Guts' Ishimatsu on September 12, 1974 - and in Japan. Tury Pineda beats the 'Hell-out-of-Guts', but gets jobbed on the 'Japanese Decision', and 'Guts Ishimatsu retains his Title by a Draw 15. - (A Horrible Decision) The truth, Tury Pineda won that fight convincingly, and should have been awarded the WBC Lightweight Title Belt. If 'Lightning Ray' got the deserved shot at the WBC Title in September 1974 instead of Tury Pineda,,,,, I'm convinced Lampkin would have jabbed the 'Living Daylights' out of 'Guts' Ishimatsu, and cruised to a Decision win. On the other hand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,'Lightning Ray' Lampkin - He took a 'foolish' fight on January 16, 1974 - a bout down in Las Vegas,,,,,,,,,
I have just watched the Duran - Lampkin fight in full. Lampkin has very good rounds 2, 3 and 4, but the fades down thge stretch. Duran really does a job on him and wins by a very hard looking knock out. Lampkin looks good, but he was no match for Duran in a 15 round fight. Woller
January 16, 1974 Ray Lampkin #2 Lightweight, 23-2-1 (8 KO's) vs. Angel Mayoral #11 Lightweight, 40-6-2 (17 KO's) This content is protected Just 5-Weeks after his December 1973 'bruising battle' with Tury Pineda,,,, 'Lightning Ray' Lampkin risks his #2 Lightweight Ranking, by taking on San Diego Lightweight, Angel 'The Danger' Mayoral in Las Vegas, at the Silver Slipper. Mayoral, a 27 year-old 'crafty southpaw', has quick hands and is an excellent counter-puncher. In the last 3-Years, the #11 Lightweight has gone 23-2-1 - and his only losses have been to the 'super-talented' and undefeated Jimmy Heair, and veteran Phillipine Light-Welterweight Ely Yares. The 10-Round bout is scheduled for a Silver Slipper 'Wednesday Night Fight', a regular attraction at the Las Vegas Strip. Angel Mayoral is a 'Regular Fighter on the Strip in Las Vegas' - and this will be his 12th-bout at the Silver Slipper. Mayoral is also managed by the smart and wise, Sid Flaherty. This will be 'no easy bout' for Ray Lampkin, as Mayoral is 'tricky quick', strong and durable. If 'Lightning Ray' Lampkin wins this bout, he will be 'in-line' for a shot at the WBC Lightweight Champion, Mexico's Rodolfo 'El Gato' Gonzalez for March 1974. Gonzalez's manager, Jackie McCoy will be in attendance, to scout both Ray Lampkin and Angel Mayoral. Esteban DeJesus, the #1 WBC/#1 WBA Lightweight will be challenging * Roberto Duran in March 1974 also, for the WBA Lightweight Championship.
The 29 1/2 year-old 'Lightning Ray', just 18-Months after his 'Great March 1975 Battle' with Roberto Duran, had lost the ability to take a 'good shot'. In the bout with Randy Shields (November 1976), Ray went down, from pretty much a 'mediocre right-hand punch' from Randy Shields in the 2nd Round. In the 3rd-Round, he was 'flat-out' Knocked-out by a 'vicious left-hook', and was unconcious by the time he hit the canvas. Randy Shields, at that time, wasn't knocking anybody out. 'Lightning Ray' Lampkin, retired after that bout.
I wonder why Mayoral didn't try and capitalise on the lampkin win.He just went back to fighting cans. Maybe he was making enough money in vegas,
January 16, 1974 (Wednesday Night Fight) Silver Slipper Casino Las Vegas, Nevada 10-Round Lightweight Bout (A WBC Key-Eliminator) 'Lightning Ray' Lampkin This content is protected #2 Ray Lampkin 23-2-1 (8 KO's) vs. #11 Angel Mayoral 40-6-2 (17 KO's) Angel Mayoral gets off first, and edges out Ray Lampkin in Rounds 1 and 2, by shooting in straight left-hand leads. The 'southpaw style' of Mayoral is bothering Lampkin, as he cannot get the range with the tricky San Diego Lightweight's slip-n-slide movement. Rounds 3 and 4, Lampkin is the aggressor, but is not effective with his combinations, as Mayoral ties up Lampkin every time the Northwest- Boxer gets close. Round 5, Mayoral lands his best punch of the fight, a counter right hook, which stuns Lampkin as he wobbles backwards. Mayoral, not a big-puncher, attacks with mid-power level left hands with Lampkin against the ropes. Round 6, behind on points, Lampkin goes to boxing from long-range, where he has moderate success. Rounds 7 and 8, Ray Lampkin tries to get Mayoral to engage in a slug-fest, but the 48-bout veteran does not fall for any 'tricks', and boxes with quick right hand jabs, and left hands to the body. Rounds 9 and 10, Lampkin attempts to rally, but is thwarted by Mayoral who ties up Lampkin time and again. When in-close, it is Mayoral who gets the better of the inside exchanges. Scorecards; Referee; Art Lurie---- 97-95 (5-3-2 in Rounds) Angel Mayoral Judge; Bill Kipp-------96-94 (6-4-0 in Rounds) Angel Mayoral Judge; Mike Gannon--97-96 (4-3-3 in Rounds) Angel Mayoral Fight Purses; Ray Lampkin......... $4000 Angel Mayoral........$3000 Note; * The loss, drops Ray Lampkin 23-3-1 to #5 in the Lightweight rankings. * The victory, improved Angel Mayoral to 41-6-2, and shoots him up to #3 in the Lightweight rankings. Unfortunately, neither Angel Mayoral or Ray Lampkin got a chance to take on WBC Lightweight Champion Rodolfo Gonzalez (who was having difficulty making the 135 lb. weight-limit in 1974). That luck was reserved for Guts Ishimatsu, who stopped Gonzalez in Japan {KO 8 in April 1974}.
I have the full Lampkin-Duran fight on film. Lampkin did no baffling. It was a sustained unwinding of Ray and a brutal beatdown in the end.
There's no shame for Lampkin in losing to Shields, who was a pretty good fighter. What is so shocking, though, is the manner in which it ended: by knockout. Shields wasn't much of a puncher. I could have seen him winning by decision -- which I doubted would happen but I realized might happen -- but by KO? I never would have dreamed.
Now that I check the record book, I see it's possible that Shields and Lampkin fought as welterweights, or jr. welterweights. Maybe the extra weight explains the surprise ending.
In November 1976,,,,,,,, 'Lightning Ray' was no more,,,,,,,,,his ability to take-a-punch was gone,,,,,,, Too many amateur fights (starting at the age of 9 in 1956), and the constant weight-draining to get to 135 lbs. And, at age 29 1/2 - Ray was an old 29 1/2. In his prime, no way could the 21 year-old Randy Shields 'knock-him-out-cold', let alone floor him. From what I have in details, the bout was fought at 139 lbs. And it was billed as 'The California-Pacific Light-Welterweight Championship'. Looks like Ray got old,,,,,,,walking up the steps to the ring that night. It happens........
Round 9 Roberto Duran controls the 'first half of the round', and 'Lightning Ray' is wobbly mid-way through the round due to weariness. Duran presses, but uses up alot of energy in trying to put away a 'weary' Lampkin, who's strength has been sapped by the sweltering heat in the Gimnasio (95+ degrees) as well as the thick humidity. Ray Lampkin comes-back in the 'last-minute-of-the-round' and out-punches the arm-weary Duran, with an assortment of head and body shots. * 0:07 - Both fighters exhchange left hooks to the body * 0:08 - Both clinch * 0:10 - Duran lands a good left hook to the body * 0:15 - Referee Isaac Hererra, in a sweat-saturated shirt, breaks the fighters apart from a clinch * 0:21 - Both fighters clinch and maul * 0:32 - Both fighters circle and feint each other * 0:38 - Duran lands a tremendous right-hand to Ray Lampkin's chin * 0:41 - Lampkin comes right back at Duran with a counter right-hand over the top * 0:44 - Both fighters clinch * 0:50 - Lampkin is right there in front of Duran, giving no ground * 0:55 - Both fighters a wild with their punches * 1:25 - Duran lands a good right-hand lead * 1:48 - Duran lands a light 3-punch combination * 1:50 - Lampkin circles, but is 'wobbly' due to weariness from the excessive heat and high-humidity * 1:51 - Duran is exhausted, and cannot pursue the 'wobbly' Lampkin * 1:52 - Duran's mouth is open, and he is gasping for air * 2:00 - Lampkin moves in, and Duran counters with a good 3-punch combination to the head and body * 2:11 - Lampkin scores with a double left jab, and a 'great' overhand right to Duran's chin * 2:12 - Duran backs up, slightly shaken * 2:14 - Lampkin scores with a good right to the body * 2:24 - Lampkin scores with a good short chopping right hand * 2:34 - Lampkin scores with a hard left to the body, as Duran bends over * 2:39 - Lampkin scores with a 4-punch fast-combination * 2:41 - Duran scores with a good left-hand counter, which backs Lampkin up * 2:44 - Lampkin is now breathing heavy, as the excessive-heat is taking its toll * 2:52 - Lampking lands another good right-hand to the body * 2:59 - Duran lands a soft left to the chin of Lampkin, who wobbles back towards his corner * 3:00 - Round Ends - Both fighters are weary. During the round, Duran is gasping for air, as his mouth-piece is nearly hanging out of his mouth. The body punches from Lampkin are bothering Duran also. At the end of the round, Lampkin cannot get his legs to move him towards his corner, as he wobbles a bit, before going back to his waiting cornermen. Round Scored for Roberto Duran. In between Rounds, Lampkin's corner does a remarkable job in reviving their fading fighter, and Lampkin bounces up. In the other corner, Duran is gasping for air, and he tries to shake his weary arms, to get the blood flowing. Round 10 Despite not having any real leg-strength, Ray Lampkin puts together a good round, and out-punches the weary-armed Duran. Fighting almost stiff-legged, Lampkin is able to land several right-hands down the ''proverbial turnpike', as he has backed Duran up and scores. During the Round, the 'ringside camera' pans Carlos Eleta (Duran's Manager), and he has a worried look on his face. {Round for Ray Lampkin}
Following the 'Upset Decion Loss to Angel Mayoral' in January 1974 March 15, 1974 (Friday Night in Tuscon, Arizona) Ray Lampkin travels to Tuscon, Arizona - to take on Nick Alfaro again. The 'tough' and 'hard-punching' Arizona Lightweight Champion 19-10-0 (16 KO's) is looking for an upset of his own, this time in his 'second bout' against the World-Rated Lampkin. In a Friday Night Television fight, 'Lightning Ray' dominates from the opening bell, and pitches a 'shut-out' Decision (W Dec 10), winning every round with quick-combinations and right-hand leads. Fight Purse; $2600 Ray Lampkin improves to 24-3-1 and maintains is #5 Lightweight Ranking. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 4, 1974 (Thursday Night at The Olympic in Los Angeles) Ray Lampkin takes on Las Vegas Lightweight, 'Chu Chu' Padilla in the 'Main Event' at The Olympic. The 21 year-old Padilla 16-3-0 (9 KO's) is a 'crowd favorite' with his brawling style. This will be a 'major step up in class' for 'Chu Chu', and an impressive performance will enhance his future. The bout will be televised on KTLA-Channel 5. This will be a 'War of the Week' bout. 4500 fans turn-out for this 'Lightweight Battle' 'Chu Chu' starts off fast, and pressures the 'slick-boxing' Lampkin over the first '3' Rounds. But 'Lightning Ray' starts ripping off fast combinations in Round '4', and drops Padilla for a 5-Count. Lampkin continues with a fine boxing exhibition, and wears 'Chu Chu' down over the next '3' Rounds. In Round 8, Lampkin nails Padilla with an overhand-right, dropping him for another 5-Count. Upon rising, Padilla is met with another on-slaught, and is dropped again by another overhand-right. 'Chu Chu' survives the 8th-Round, just barely. In Round 9, Lampkin stalks the dazed Padilla, and finally catches him with a double left-right combination, which stuns 'Chu Chu', forcing Referee John Thomas to stop the bout at 0:53 of Round 9. Fight Purse; $2500 Ray Lampkin improves to 25-3-1 (9 KO's), and moves up to the #4 Lightweight
