Toney is a hell of a fighter but Hagler would have had him. Toney would probably have some good moments early but down the stretch Hagler finds him more and is completely undeterred by anything James is throwing back and if it's a fifteen rounder? Toney will more than just lose, he will be FUBAR'd. And I'm a big admirer of Toney's but it doesn't matter. 12 rounds: Hagler UD 15: rounds, a possible stoppage (although Toney hasn't been stopped even now as a competing heavyweight, but I think he could be roughed up to that point)
I think he would out-box him,i love Toney but he always struggled with fighters with good movement and guys that boxed from the outside(RJJ,Nunn,Tiberi)most think that Hagler was just a brawler cause of his wars with Hearns and Mugabi but that was late in his career when he had lost a couple of steps, prime Hagler the one that fought Minter,Sibson,Hamsho was a master at picking guys apart from the outside behind his right jab and sometimes switching to orthodox and countering beautyfuly i would pick that Hagler to out-box Toney in a very good fight and a great clash of styles.
Great match up almost a pick em fight but I'd give the edge to Hagler simply because he's arguably the GOAT at 160 and Toney isn't. It would be interesting seeing Hagler react to Toney standing right in front of him trying to counter him.
that's what i thought would make it interesting... toney didnt become great at defense until later in his career, but knowing that he was also iron-chinned and willing to mix it up left me thinking about this fight.......
I am a fan of both but Hagler is my all time favorite. Without being too bias, Hagler is the most talented fighter Toney would face. If Hagler can take on a slick, strong and fast fighter like SRL, he can take on Toney and win it. Hagler 10-2 or 13-2.
Damn, I would love to see this. I love Toney, but prime Hagler is too much. Even the Hagler that fought Mugabi and SRL would probably win. Such a great matchup though. Both have great chins, so you know it's not going to be over too soon. I don't think Toney would make the mistake of brawling with Hagler. If he did, ouch. Toney doesn't have enough pop to trouble Hagler, and he doesn't use enough movement to avoid him. I see James getting his ass back to Detroit after a hellacious evening. Hagler UD.
Hagler by competitive, yet clear decision. It'd be a high class chessmatch/war with neither man getting hurt as they both had cast iron chins.
It would be an excellent fight alright, an all time classic. As to who wins, I'm going with the majority on this and saying Hagler by decision. I think it would be one of those fights where one fighter, in this case Hagler, is throwing a lot more punches but on reply Toney is blocking, rolling etc. with a lot of them, and not as many are getting in clean and people think. That said, Toney still looses because he's took busy catching, and isn't throwing enough.
