Because he's a great boxer. I'm not so sure about 160 though because Toney was weight drained at this weight, and I think it's unfair to put him in against the ATG middleweight. But honestly, Toney is slick, hard to hit, Haglers certainly won't be able to outbox him, and he'll have to play the role of the aggressor, but Toney's chin was great, and his defense made it very hard to hit him. Guys that gave this version of Toney trouble were guys like Roy Jones who used their legs to get out of the way, and speed to "score" points. It was nothin but flash. Haglers isn't a flash fighter. He's a guy that lands some serious punches, but he also doesn't have the athleticism, the speed, and the movement that Roy had. An in shape James Toney with the right mindset is a nightmare matchup for any fighter. The man is serious.
MMH, clear UD. He'd outbox James behind his right jab and get the better of exchanges. MMH was more versatile too.
Neither guy gets stopped that for sure. The problem with Toney is his consistency. I'll say this, on their best nights in the ring Toney has the style to beat hagler. hagler was a leading pressure fighter and toney is a master of countering. Id take Toney on their best night to win a UD. If they fought 5 times Id pick hagler to win 3-2, if that makes sense
We know Hangler is going to be ready. But, we don't know what kind of shape Toney will come in. That alone makes me pick Hagler. Even assuming Toney comes in at this best, I think Hagler would simply outwork him. But it would be a great fight.
Hagler wasnt a leading pressure fighter. For most of his career, he was a boxer-puncher who boxed behind his right jab.
Yeah he is. JT was an inside technician/counterpuncher. He didnt have MMH's movement, jab, or outside boxing skill.
Toney was still improving at middleweight. He wasn't very consistent, looking brilliant against McCallum in the first fight, and then looking awful later against Tiberi and not as good in the rematch with McCallum. Toney loved guys to come at him so he could counter effectively. Hagler most likely would box him from the outside as he usually did, as it would be in his best interest to do so. Hagler's busy jab would give Toney all sorts of problems as it did to most opponents. So would the lateral movement. Toney would get some shots in, but Hagler had a great chin anyway. Toney would hold his own. Hagler still wins a competitive but clear decision.
Hagler and it would be very easy. Hagler was very crafty and I can visualize him setting multiple traps and putting some serious leather on Toneys ass, JT retires on his stool after 10 rounds.
That's how i feel. Kind of suprised to see everyone saying Hagler outboxes him. And Hagler is Smaller, it's not like he can fight like Nunn and control things from outside.
