Inspired by Megavolts thread about ATG Middleweights.

If we have an imaginary Lightweight tournament, consisting of ATG Lightweights, who would you pick to come out on top?

    Does anyone go undefeated?
Who gives who the most trouble?

    1. Roberto Duran
    2. Julio Cesar Chavez
    3. Sugar Shane Mosley
    4. Sweat Pea
    5. Floyd Mayweather Junior
    6. (Wild card) Juan Manuel Marquez

I dont think anyone would be undefeated because these are all greats and the styles make fights would play out. I think maybe Mosley and Marquez would be a little out of their league though their great but the others are the special type of fighters

Yea I agree with Alakran. Duran, Leonard, and Chavez would be my top 3 picks at 135. I will say Benny Leonard might be my pick to win a tournament.

I knew there was someone missing, but i think i would still favor a prime focused Duran to win it

Mosley is in there because he was a huge and powerful Lightweight, with blazing hand speed and bullish physical power. He's easily the biggest guy in the tournament and presents different problems to what the others do. He also never lost at the weight, though I reconginse that he never fought a great LW. People who saw Shane at 135 will also re-call that he could box pretty well too.

JMM is in there as a wildcard, simply because of how clever he is. Again it's a different set of problems for the other contestants. I don't expect him to win, but I would expect him to throw a spanner into the works.

I included Benny Leonard originally, but changed it to Sweat Pea. I reasoned that not everyone would of seen Leonard or know much about him, so by swapping to a more modern fighter, I can open opinion up to everybody.

    Leonard at 135? Wtf?
In answer to the OP's question: that could go any way. The only dudes who ain't coming out wit Ws are JCC and JMM (one of my favorite fighters, but not an atg LW). Mosley was fast as lightning at LW, as was Floyd. My money (no pun intended) would be on Duran in a battle of attrition with everyone involved - especially if the fights were 15 rounds. Campion.

Ohhh, you mean BENNY Leonard, not Sugar Ray. My bad.

I'm very suprised that you don't have Chavez as a front runner here.

Quite a complex matrix of styles in there. Interesting you didn't include at least Benny Leonard of the old school dudes EDIT: saw your post on why, good call

Before I write anything I will post a disclaimer for all Floyd fans and detractors that this is just my opinion. Plz don't nobody get no butthurt

Also, because of the closeness of these fighter's eras, there is a lot of overlap where the fighters actually fought each other, and secondly just by glossing over the list, slick black looks like the key to winning (among this group of fighters at least)

Duran is the GOAT at LW, and a rather big LW as well. Avenged his only loss at the weight in brutal fashion. Twice. I can see his dirty tactics frustrating a few on the list, I'd actually have an enjoyable time watching Duran and Pea foul each other to death. Great power, a firefight with Shane would be quite something. When it comes to actual boxing, people always like to jump on his frustration in Leonard II, but in fact he was very well in the fight at the time of the "quit job" in fact he was only behind by a point or two by the judges (and I agree with it)-- this doesn't mean he isn't prone to getting outboxed. He may have smashed through Buchanan and have more than a hat trick of good names at LW but when he stepped up to the ATG class of talent in welter he had some difficulty, especially when it came to slick fighters (don't get me wrong, Duran has some good head movement himself look at some of his fights). It's a really tough call because this is really in regards to Pea and Mayweather, in the end I think he would have a slight advantage against Mayweather but a slight disadvantage against Pea.

Whitaker is the slickest cutie-pie style of the bunch, and a southpaw. Not only that, he knows how to play dirty too. To be honest, Whitaker H2H is probably the biggest nightmare of them all and has the best chance to come out on top, even 6-0. Normally the southpaw stance is more of a factor when it comes to those who play at range, and less to those who close the distance but welp, he already whooped Chavez so that's that. I see him picking apart Duran at range, out slicking him, and giving return fouls. Mayweather can adjust and is a technical conventional fighter, well Whitaker is an improvisational and technical southpaw. Marquez, other than his close fights with Pacquiao, has only lost to pure boxers. Now Mosley, he would have the best chance IMO to upset Sweet Pea; more on that in a bit.

Mayweather is the second coming of the slickness in this group- While not of the school of pure slickness like Whitaker, there's a bit of conventional/textbook style embedded in his skillset. I can see him outdoing Chavez, but I can also see Chavez' bodywork taking its toll. He already beat Marquez (idc that it was at a different weight, or whatever bloated/2lb excuse, it was pretty one sided and at LW it might be worse). People will always think of the first Castillo fight when trying to look for faults in Floyd's game but the real fight to look at is the 2nd Castillo fight, where Floyd won more clearly, but it was still close. I see him beating Marquez, slight edge on Chavez, but losing to the other 3. Mayweather-Whitaker I'd probably fall asleep and re-watch lol. I was always under the school of thought that if Mosley rocked Floyd that hard in their fight, if both were 10 years younger I think Mosley would have the energy to take the W.

Mosley is what throws this whole circle for a loop, I think Mosley is the true wildcard in this matchup because of how much of a H2H beast this guy was at LW. He didn't beat too many big names down there, but he proved his worth by moving up and owning anyway. Big Lightweight, piston jab (before that pawing jab that he has now) very heavy and fast hands, honestly this is almost like a mini Jones we're talking here. Only problem is that he's not hard to find, but he has a good chin anyway. I can see him beating Floyd and Chavez, and Marquez, but losing to the rest. Therefore I have him around the same area where I'd put Floyd, around 3-4, but might edge it over him on the aforementioned account, even though Floyd would have a better chance against the top 2.

Chavez is more of a fighter but he can box as well- problem is that he's in with guys who (mostly) eat and sleep boxing school, rather than blood and guts. He got schooled by Pernell already. People will also point to his "losing" victory against Taylor and quote the difficulty he has against handspeed, but I will go the other way and say that the fact of the matter is that he won, and showed a great chin and display of power on the way. I think Duran is superior to Chavez in all aspects; Mosley, although not as proven, has the athleticism to defeat him. Mayweather would be a 50/50 fight imo, Chavez might have a slight disadvantage. Chavez is an ATG puncher, but Mayweather's faced solid body punchers and is very slick to boot. I think the only one he can beat here is Marquez.

Marquez looks to be a lil out of his league in this list but only because the main body of his accomplishments are at FW rather than LW and above, and the people listed are bigger in general. He's in the twilight of his career but if he can pull some big ones out of the bag then that would give him much more consideration. I will acknowledge though that he has an amazing ability to adapt and I don't doubt that he could potentially give many of the fighters trouble after analyzing them through the fight, but unfortunately he would probably have to hit the canvas many times in order to do so. Actually, I think he could do very well against Whitaker, depending on how Pea would like to engage and the difference in workrate between the two.

    Whitaker
    Duran
    Mosley
    Mayweather
    Chavez
    Marquez

Now if you swapped Marquez for Arguello, I'd have to re-evaluate.

Funny thing about Chavez and Duran. I can see Mosley beating Chavez but not Duran, yet I see Whitaker beating Duran more convincinly than beating Chavez.

It's not all that farfetched. Beating someone more convincingly is harder than just beating someone.

I honestly didn't even consider Alexis :patsch

Above is a brilliant post, appreciate it :good

I agree with alot of it. In my head Mosley is the biggest problem for Pernell.

Duran vs Pea is my favourite fantasy fight at this weight, and it's closely followed by Duran vs Mosley.

I understand everyone dismissing Marquez, but he's only there was a wildcard; as a potential spanner in the works.

    I have it

    1. Duran
    2. Pea
    3. Mosley
    4. Mayweather
    5. Chavez
    6. Marquez

I don't think anybody comes out unbeaten.
