this thread is in trouble. It wont let me cut and paste from a word document anymore. I have tried on two separate computers. Is this due to changes to the forum?

Chris Byrd is the man to take the crown from Lennox (with his retirement) Will be interesting to compare the competition of some of the claimants at this stage. His first defence was against the 10th ranked fighter which is not too bad compared to recent previous champions.

Vitali fought the 8th ranked Corrie Sanders. Evander Toney and McCall fought unranked fighters. Ruiz fought the 11th ranked fighter and Golota who does generally have the better reputation and did draw with Byrd. Rahman fought the 17th ranked fighter.

Vitali's first career would actually finish with him ranked as the 9th best fighter. A little disappointing and very surprising. Surely his second career will be an improvement. Based on these rankings, it does seem that Byrd and ruiz were the guys fighting and beating the highest ranked and most proven contenders. Strangely, it does seem that being non heavy hitters with a "boring" style to many, it does seem that these to ushered in the modern trend of ranking fighters on how they look more so than who they actually beat

Despite the top guys not really fighting each other it is actuallyquite interesting from a historical perspective. The late 90s fighters do seem to be more than holding their own against the new wave which is what I would have expected.

I am very surprised to see Audley Harrison make his way into these rankings at this stage.

Nicolay Valuev moves into the top 30

Mike Tyson sadly drops out of the top 30.

Wladimir fought Williamson after Brewster. So Wlad should be above Williamson. He should be number 7, above Sanders, Vitali, and Brewster.
EDIT: Nevermind. TOS got his ranking for beating McCall, which was after the Wlad fight. Sorry.

Not only was chris byrd the logical replacement to Lennox, and ducked by lennox, but his defences were technically as good as many of Lennox defences or at least not that much worse.

Nicolai Valuev actually beat 2 top 10 contenders this year, a suprising statistic and deserved title challenger.

Toney is another who seemed to be competing with the legitimate top 10s. More so than many of the up and coming bigger and younger fighters.

Wlad takes over as no 1 fighter in the world. A little earlier than I would have thought previously. He is set up to rank extremely high in terms of all time longevity. It will be ineresting to see how his reign compares with number of top 10 opposition actually beaten. I think it might end up more impressive than Lennox and Evander and even guys like Frazier and Dempsey. I don think he will reach the dominance of Louis Ali and Johnson, but he might. From memory he does seem to have really cleaned the division towards the end.

James Toney was actually fighting as many top 10 fighters as anyone of the time. It surprises me a bit. It is a shame he didn’t go up a year or two earlier.

The old champs rank 1, 7, 11, 13 and 15 all are still very competitive with the new wave of fighters. It does seem like the generation of this time was using the tactic of avoiding the older fighters so that they aged and taking the easy fights. It probably says more about the politicks of he sport than the apility, though.

I could be wrong, but to me the top 10 doesn’t look real strong at all and the 10-20 spots also seem to be decidedly average and dominated by older fighters who are aging and simply not fighting at the highest level.

So far Wad is continuing the recent tradition of fighting fighters outside the top 10.

Povetkin was building himself as a pretty good top 10 challenger. He had beaten 2 oher top 10s (which at this stage was better than Wlad.

Robert hawkins win over Guinn was a good win in the middle of a huge losing streak.

Jameel McLine had a decent career especially early on, but he was really starting to struggle to step back up in class now.

Joe Mesi Finishes his career just inside the top 30.

Wlad with two solid wins over no 8 and 13 but he is still avoiding most of his top 10 at this stage. Looking at the rankings, Wlad v Povekin, which happens in a few years should have been a lot bigger than it was. One of the first 1 v 2 matchups in quite a while.

Povetkin actually looks very underated so far. He is entrenched in the top 10 and it takes the very best to actually beat him. If he ends up emerging as the championship ahead of Joshua Wilder and Fury (he has lost once to these guys), I think he might just deserve all time great status with hindsight.

Chris Byrd creates what might just be the biggest blip ever by losing to a light heavyweight, and not even a great one. Not sure how this will effect things.

Vitali with a huge win after a 4 year break gives him a career high ranking of number 5. And probably higher, with number 3 and 4 both campaining as light heavys not heavys.

It interesting, So far, Valuev's title opponents are roughly on par with Klitschko's.

Chris Henry moves into third place. Not bad for someone who never actually fought a heavyweight!

Chris Byrd retires as the 5th best heavyweight in the world. A big achievement, despite a strange ending to his career.

The up and coming young fighters are not beating the older fighters at the moment. But it seems to be more through lack of testing themselves rather than trying and failing, as has happened in some other eras. The modern way to the top seems clear. Fight unranked fighters and get a long enough win streak to challenge a klitschko. The klischko's legacies are starting to take shape and really improve, but it does seem like the Chris Byrd/Shaun George upset may cost them an all time great level of dominance but we will see how it goes.

Kubrat Pulev does well to debut in the top 30 in his first year. His record actually looks as good or better than any challengers of this era. I am not sure if this will transfer into rankings, but he looks like he should definitely be considered one of the main challengers for the current title. He has a good level of competition and only a prime Wlad has been able to beat him.

Byrd and George was always a strange result. Most blame it on old age or weight drain. They are probably correct but not definitely. This result opens up so many questions. Byrd dropped 35 lbs,he says by training with longer road work. This was the norm in the older days. does this mean that someone like Jeffries would have been more like 270 if he trained like today? Would smaller fighters like Sharkey or others suddenly look like todays fighters if they trained the same?

In these rankings, a win is a win and a loss is a loss. It is the only real way to go. There will be times where a fighter gets a bad decision. It doesnt and shouldnt matter. Weight is a condition of the fight. It doesnt change the result. If Fury and Ruiz fight today, with a condition of 6 rounds and Fury wins on points or by KO, the conditions of the fight dont effect it. If it is a ND fight then neither fighter benefits from no decision even if Fury completely dominates. if both fighters agree to a weight condition, it is an extra condition on the fight and doesnt effect the rankings.

Most modern fans say we have weight divisions for a reason (correct of course) but they assume that the 30 best heavyweights in the world are the 30 best fighters in the world. i dont think that this is the case. If heavyweight versions of Toney, Jones Jr and Byrd (well more so the first two for sure ) fought middleweight or light heavyweight versions of themselves, i doubt they would win every time. The question is how many heavyweights would lose fights to cruiserweight or light heavyweights or even middleweights. It is the advent of these weight divisions that has really robbed the modern scene of depth, more than anything else. i think this is what has ultimately wore down the value of the heavyweight title. There are not enough legitimate contenders around anymore

It is a strange thing that an average light heavy weight (was he even one of the 10 best light heavys in the world at the time?) is able to bet what is definitely a top 10 heavyweight. Would Byrd have fared better if he came in at a higher weight against George. Nobody knows the answer to this. But this win raises questions.

And Toney's form is another. He was grossly overweight, that is surely common ground. Yet he beat as many heavy contenders as anyone outside the Klitschos. And he was old and well past his best. You say he and Byrd are ranked too highly. But they actually beat proven contenders and quite a few of them.

All of these rankings are historically interesting. In the era of the modern Super heavy, overweight smaller fighters are astonishingly successful. if we returned to one title and no cruiserweights, with fighters fighting 12 times a year, i have no doubt that the heavyweight top 10 would not look anything like it does today. Certainly the top 50 would look nothing like it does today. I think i could say that with certainty.

Wlad Really starting to exert some form of dominance with a win over 8th ranked peter and 7th ranked chambers

Chris Byrd and Shaun George both retiring inside the top 10. Nicolay Valuev also retiring at number 12.

Interesting to see Antonio Tarver, another light heavyweight move into the top 15. this really does have to be the lowest quality of heavys for some time. It is interesting that he earned his ranking straight after losing two ibf world light heavy title fights.

Thee has been an awful lot of retirements this year, it seems the only way hat any of the next generatino of heavys can break into the rankings.

Kubrat Pulev had a pretty good year.

I have to say, this year does seem very down on quality.

    Wlad is slowly asserting dominance.

The Chris Henry light heavy blip is continuing, but it is interesting that Vitali, who many considered world champ at the time, just had arguably his best win. And it was against Adamek, who found the light heavy division (courtesy of chad dawson) too hard and started climbing through the Heavy ranks.

Helenius with three good wins over at least two previously ranked fighters.

Toney joins the list of heavys losing to lighter fighters with his loss to cruiserweight Lebedev. Admittedly, age is clearly slowing him up though. Lebedev if nothing else beat two pretty decent pound for pound fighters that year, in Toney and Jones Jr!

Evander finally retires in 12th spot.

Carlos Takkem seems to have a pretty decent record outside of the big guns of the era. It will be interesting to see how his current ranking compares with his current boxrec ranking of 27

Vitali ends his career in 4th spot of what really was quite a disappointing career froma lineal perspective.

There really isnt much movement among the top contenders because they are simply not fighting each other. That being said you do get the feeling that next generation are starting to finally about to burst onto the scene. It seems to be taking old age and retirements and there does seem to be a drop off in the number of USA fighters but it does look like we may be at least starting to see a vibrant scene again. The action really did seem to be more in Britain and Europe at the moment.
