you hear about divisions having a linear champion, but I was just wondering if p4p ratings have any such thing. i.e linear p4p king obviously I know the lists are relative and usually open too opinion, but if there is such a thing would any1 be able to provide a list or point out where I could find one?:good
I would think that the succession of the best p4p fighter would very rarely be decided in the ring, if ever. For one thing, they are at all different weight classes, so possibly could not even fight each other. For another, if a p4p top guy gets beaten, the spot will go to the 2nd place p4p guy, not the guy who beat him, unless he is also high on the list. Anyway, I doubt the #1 p4p guy ever fought the #2 p4p guy, so if Mayweather takes on Manny, it will probably be the first chance we have of starting a linear p4p chain, but it is very doubtful that it will continue long without interruption because fights like that are rare.
The term best pound for pound means IMO who is the best fighter. So in theory a fighter does not even need to lose to lose the crown of best fighter pound for pound. For example going into 1989 I (like I suspect most) had Tyson #1 pound for pound, but he put in a poor show (for peak Tyson) against Bruno, at the same time Julio Cesar Chavez was at or near the peak of his powers at 135lbs, so it could be argued after the Bruno win, Tyson loss his #1 spot to Chavez. Now in May 89 Chavez moved up to 140 and beat Roger Mayweather (again), but looked a little ragged doing so, so perhaps then Tyson got his #1 spot back and Chavez slipped once more, despite neither them losing a fight. Also it is not automatic for a fighter who beats the #1 best pound for pound fighter, to win that title himself. Again going back to Tyson, few if any would of called James Douglas the best pound for pound fighter after he upset Tyson.... So in short the answer to your question is no; boxing is rarely black and white, and pound for pound stuff is ridiculously subjective and pretty much pointless, but fun....
thanks thats more the point of what i was getting at......for example whittaker held the p4p title for a number of years after he lost, another fighter would have been 'seen; as number 1 (not nesarcarilly the fighter who beat him) obviously people like jones, mayweather have held the mythical title and mayweather has just been succeeded by pacman, was just wondering if any1 could produce a timeline of these changes
