Liniment In The Eyes,,,,,,,, 'Believe It Or Not' This was an 'old' Professional Wrestling 'prop gag'. Usually used by the 'bad guy', to blind the 'good guy'. Then the 'bad guy' would pummel the 'good guy' within moments of defeat, until the 'good guy' was able to clear his eyes, usually with help from some 'Good Angel' sitting at ringside. Then, with his eyes clear, the 'good guy' would come back to defeat the 'evil bad guy' to win the bout. EVIL BAD GUY This content is protected
Smart Observation. Just who was part of the Miami Beach 'Liston vs. Clay' promotion. Chris Dundee, The Miami Beach Boxing and Wrestling Promoter, also known as 'The King of Wrestling'. Do you think he knew any 'tricks' that would get the crowd thinking.
This is a part of what i've been trying 2 get through 4 a while . Ali's career was a professional wrestling gag , cheap entertainment 4d masses . Like religion . Ali gave d public what d public deserved . D public hadn't changed much since then though and continues 2 buy in2 gag . Honestly d same holds 4 Louis & Dempsey and 2 a much lesser Xtent but in d same manner : Tunney .
Yes, Chris Dundee, promoted the weekly Friday Night 'Wresting Shows' in Miami Beach in 1964. At, the Miami Beach Auditorium and The Convention Hall. 'LINIMENT IN THE EYES' Coincidence. January 17, 1964 Brute Bernard and Skull Murphy pull the 'same stunt' on Don Curtis and Mark Lewin in a 'Tag-Team Match'. Don Curtis 'good guy' gets blinded by some foreign substance put in his eye by Brute Bernard 'bad guy'. As Don Curtis is getting worked over in the 'bad guy corner' by both Skull Martin and Brute Bernard, a 'Good Angel' sitting at ringside rushes over, and tosses water in the face of Don Curtis. Miraculously, Don Curtis' eyes clear up, and he rushes back to his 'good corner', where he slap-tags Mark Lewin, who then enters the ring, and pummels both 'bad guys', and eventually pins Brute Bernard (the culprit who put the liniment in Don Curtis' eyes). Now, where did we see this 'stunt' pulled a few weeks later.
I remember most of these names from when I was a kid. There was an Oz wrestling show called World Championship Wrestling on every Saturday and Sunday and some of these guys were on it. Brute Barnard (George 'the animal' Steele copied some of his antics in the 80's. Like ripping the padding from the turnbuckle and chucking it all over the place), Killer Kowalski, Killer Kark Cox, Haystack Calhoun, Dick the Bulldog Brower etc etc And there was always someone with the old 'foreign object' used to gouge at the opponents eyes. It was usually hidden down the trunks :rofl
Did Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay steal their 'act' from these two. Brute Bernard and Skull Murphy. This content is protected
Miami Beach in February 1964,,,,,,,, Filled with 'tourists' who were just looking for entertainment. They did not care one 'iota' about Sonny Liston or Cassius Clay or the Heavyweight Championship for that matter.
Don't forget Ali modeled himself after wrestler "Gorgeous George"......the first to use the title "Greatest of All Times" !!!! & "I'm so pretty....I can't be beat".
Both of those fights had a lot of pro wrestling smell to them. The liniment in the eyes. The goofus referee who didn't know what was going on. Stepin Fetchit teaching Clay the secret punch that won the fight for him. Clay's weigh-in antics. I think you're on to something Senor Pepe.
