Classic members. Might be a reasonable time to post some personal regards to Lionel Rose. Let the legend know of you own thoughts of him and his contribution to the game. These responses will be forwarded to Lionel if you wish. Love to hear from Chu Chou and Rubin Olivares if they are able to be contacted. Just a thought anyway.
Great fighter, one of my favourites. Loved his fights with Harada and Castillo and certainly no shame to lose his title to Olivares. He fought in arguably the strongest Bantamweight era ever and was the champion. :good
Enter AlFrancis, i've met Al in person and he told me some great stories, but i'd rather let him tell than me do so. He's probably shared stuff with you already Flamengo. From me, I've always thought Lionel Rose remains the most intimidating bantamweight of all time. And oh yeah, he was one of the most skilled boxers of a golden era of bantams.
Rudkin and Lionel have a pretty strong bond Teeto. It's awesome that such respects are shared between fighters after so many years- considering 1 hour of fistic warfare brought them together. Some good friends witnessed the Rudkin vs Rose bout live. All continue to talk of it as a marvellous encounter, in many ways being the biggest 'Aussie vs anyone' bout of this countries history. An Aboriginal defending his World title (only the second time an Aussie had defended a fully recognised World title on home soil) and that bout took place at KOOYONG TENNIS STADIUM. KOOYONG is an ABORIGINAL word... I think it means "One pitiful score card"???? lol Al might giggle at that.
great post Flamengo. The fight is truly a classic, and so so close. Last time i watched it it came down to how i gave one round which was so close to judge, it might have been round 11 but i really can't remember. I swung it to Rose that time, and i'm from Liverpool, so praise me for my non-bias
The nasty side of the bout appears to be a certain score card.. Lionel was given EVERY round!!! With that, a second legend was born.. That legend being the score card itself. The judge Officiating was a great man in Oz boxing.. except for that shocking blemish.
Ray Mitchell :fire by the way, see the avatar. That's dad presenting Lionel with a post fight cup of tea. Stillmates after battering each other for 15 rounds.
I'm a big fan of Lionel Rose, he has such a pleasant boxing style to watch, an effortless grace that he and Johnny Famechon had naturally.
Yeah Al, Ray's the man. Baffled a lot of people that night I'm sure. The story following that fight is incredible mate. Your old man showed immense sportsmanship through his actions. Was bloody amazed to hear the details from Jenny and your Mum... grateful to be listening and sharing the afternoon with them. :good Patto, you need to be a Light Welterweight and make Bantam to emulate Lionel's physique mate. The Aboriginal fighting rythym is something extraordinary.
Dad was asked if Lionel was the best bantam he'd fought post fight. He said I don't know about best bantam but he was definitely the best featherweight I've ever fought.
Famechon, Rose and Mcgowan are great, aesthetic fighters to watch. Will have to see more of Rudkin as well. The level of comp he had to face in British title fights puts most of todays 'world' title fights to shame.
LMAO.... That's the best quote attributed to the fight I've ever heard.. The second best is "Ray ya stupid *****, what fight were you watching"???
By the way Flamengo, good luck to Australia tomorrow against Germany. I'm sure all us Englishmen will be rooting for them.
