I remember someone posted a link to a list (top40 I think) of the biggest boxing and MMA live gate ever. I've been searching for that list for like an hour. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
I dont know, but I do know that it is a MYTH that mma sells more than boxing in he u.s. when you find it, look at the total gate and pay per view sales of the last two big UFC shows, and then the last two big fights in boxing, pac-cotto and mayweather-marquez. those numbers show that all boxing needs are marquee names and it will be back on the map, that is literally all it needs. it doesn't need to appeal to the kiddies with jacked referees, hard rock music, purple hair and flying knees. all it needs are fighters who capture the hearts of fans.
yea but that's easier said than done. there aren't exactly champions up and down the weight classes with mainstream exposure, just in a few spots
If I remember correctly. Delahoya by himself has earned more money in Nevada then all the UFC shows put together. I just need to find that damn list again. I've tried searching for everything I can think of but came up with nothing.
http://boxing.nv.gov/New_Gates.htm http://boxing.nv.gov/New_MMAGates.htm According to these figures, the top MMA gate ever (Liddell/Ortiz) would fall in at number 35 behind Tyson/Ruddock 1 and ahead of De La Hoya/Whitaker.
but boxing is a sport that constantly generates champions, it has that top-down system which works so well. that is exactly why it goes through its rough spots, but its only a matter of time, literally time, before we see some electrifying personalities emerge. the fact that boxing is such a tough road and college/professional sports has become a much easier road to travel will always hurt boxing, but theres no doubt that we will see some high caliber champions with personality emerge in the next few years. all we need is that one athletic youngster with a fire in his belly, intelligence and charismatic attitude to pick up the gloves, instead of the bat, basketball or football
The problem with some of those figures is that the older ones aren't adjusted towards inflation on the boxing side.
the thing is this. If you loose in MMA your still a star. If you loose in Boxing You have to win 2 years straight to even think about PPV again your star is taken
I dont know, there are fighters who defy your theory. cotto, hopkins, de la hoya. there are guys who defy that logic, you just have to have that edge that generates the interest of the fans regardless.
