I am not talking about guys like Holyfield who hung around for way too many fights, but fighters who, had they retired just a single bout earlier, would have done themselves more good than sticking around for that one last fight.

Tough call, because fighters rarely leave at the exact right moment.

All too often they seem to hang around much longer than they should. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single example, though I'm sure something will come to me.

Jim Jeffries had a one fight comeback that did him no good.

I think Lennox Lewis knew he'd gone one fight over, and didn't want to go two fights over.

Jersey Joe Walcott went out quite farcically in the Marciano rematch. Had he hung them up after the first fight it would have been a more fitting last appearance.

Sugar Ray Leonard never should've came back for the Hector Camacho fight.

Arguello should have quit after the Costello fight. Instead he made a breif attempt at a come back in late 94/early 95. He barely squealed out a majoriity decision over Jorge Palermo and lost to Scott Walker. He could have gone out with a good win over a good fighter, but -- well -- the rest is history.

Joe Louis. I think the Marciano fight is what pushed him over the edge.

Even the Lalonde fight on was a comeback. He hadn't fought for 1 1/2 years going into Lalonde. 1 year and 3 months going into Norris. Little wonder things were going south.

If he retires today, Chris Byrd applies.

If Ali had retired after the second Spinks fight, he may be a lot better off today. He took a bad beating against Holmes, when he was too old and slow to absorb it.
