I really liked the guy. A little for the sideshow appeal, but he wasn't a terrible boxer. Always wanted to see SNV v Vitali. Would be something!
I don`t think Ali can be called a tall heavyweight, he was taller than most of his opponents during an era when heavyweights were comparably small.
If they were smaller, and he was taller then most then.....??? You can only judge these guys against their era.
I really liked Breland and wanted him to do well. But he never seemed to adjust to pro boxing the way other amateur greats did. He was immensely talented, enough so that he became a champion despite his shortcomings. Davis and Starling really starched him. He was tall like Hearns but never reached that level.
Thomas Hearns and Bob Foster always stand out. Tall guys who used that leverage to maximum efficiency.
I read onetime someone talking about the difference in both of them maybe Emanuel. He said Tommy was physically stronger than Mark and you can see this in how Hearns had a bigger upperbody, but thinner legs than Mark. He was built to move up better than Mark was so he had that physicality Mark did not and it helped him. Also his mindset was a little tougher than Mark, who had a better style for amateur boxing. Hearns had a better professional style of taking it to guys and breaking them up. I think Breland and Hearns were near the same height, but Hearns had a one inch longer reach.. 77 to 78 for Hearns.
