(This thread is also running in the General Forum. I'm curious to see if there's much difference in the outlook of the classic posters.) ATG list suffer (IMO) from comparisons between the likes of Dempsey and Lewis, Langford and Holyfield, Greb and Hopkins etc. In addition to the dearth of video from far-back eras, the sport is different. (frequency of fights, rules, nutrition etc.) So lets just look back to 1970 and list your top ten ATG list, using whatever criteria you choose for such lists. (LIMIT IT TO TEN !). (You can count fighters like Ali and Duran, whose careers predate 1970, but had a substantial portion of their career since that date.)
1. Duran 2. Leonard 3. Ali 4. Whitaker 5. Jones 6. Arguello 7. Pacquiao 8. Napoles 9. Spinks 10. Mayweather Jr. The order might be weird/in need of reexamination, but that's probably where I'm at off the top of my head.
1. Duran 2. Leonard 3. Ali (as per 1970 cut off point) 4. Whittaker 5. Napoles 6. Arguello 7. Monzon 8. Hagler 9. Hopkins 10. Mike Spinks Edit: Forgot Mantequilla, ****ed it up all round Honourable mentions: Roy Jones, Tommy Hearns Off the top of my head.
1-Leonard 2- Duran 3- Ali 4- Pacquiao 5-Roy Jones 6-Whitaker 7-Hopkins 8-Hearns 9-M. Spinks 10-Chavez
Off the top of my head (I will forgot one or two major fighters I'm sure, always do): 1.Muhammad Ali 2.Roberto Duran 3.Ray Leonard 4.Pernell Whitaker 5.Carlos Monzon 6.Alexis Arguello 7.Manny Pacquiao 8.Jose Napoles 9.Michael Spinks 10.Roy Jones Jr Honourable Mentions: Julio Cesar Chavez, Ruben Olivares, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Salvador Sanchez, Bernard Hopkins (didn't include guys who peaked/had the majority of their careers in the 1960s, eg Emile Griffith, Luis Manuel Rodriguez etc)
Popkins, agree with the below :thumbsup (didn't include guys who peaked/had the majority of their careers in the 1960s, eg Emile Griffith, Luis Manuel Rodriguez etc)[/QUOTE]
Is this thread because I said it wasn't ludicrous to have Floyd outside of the top 50 best fighters of all time? ;-)
!/ Duran 2/ Monzon 3/ Ali (From 1964-75) 4/ Leonard 5/ Hagler 6/ Whitaker 7/ Jones 8/ Hearns 9/ Chavez 10/ Mayweather PHEW....! That was tough. This is it,as of today. I'm pretty steady on my first three, but I'm always shifting the rest around. Even moving some in and out of the top 10.
Hmmmmm Ali Duran Leonard Whittaker Pac Monzon Arguello Hopkins Jones jr Napoles I believe all them make my current top 30 (overgoing a major, and I mean major, overhaul)
In order of who I think are the outright best 1. Jones 2. Leonard 3. Whitaker 4. Mayweather 5. Duran 6. Tyson/Holyfield (joint) 8. Hopkins 9. Sanchez 10. Chavez/Pacman (joint) (not including Ali, if I did he'd be around 4th or Napoles, who'd probably be above BHOPs) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9CvKThmlqY[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjLCKJV079o&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifvCXDqYZU0[/ame]
By the same token, the only man to beat Hopkins before he was 40 and suffering diminished stamina and power was a prime Roy Jones (other than a meaningless debut loss of course), whereas Floyd was outfought in his prime by a vastly inferior fighter to Jones - Jose Luis Castillo. OK Floyd won the rematch, but it doesn't erase the fact that he got outlanded in his prime by a guy not fit to lace Jones's boots.
Only post-1970 accomplishments taken into account... 1. Duran 2. Leonard 3. Ali 4. Whitaker 5. Monzon 6. Arguello 7. Pacquiao 8. Napoles 9. Jones 10. Holyfield Chavez, Spinks, Hopkins, Hagler, and Hearns finish the top 15, in that order.
